Hi
I have a 95 xlt sp 600. it has 5k on it, everything is stock. I just
bought it used. I think the thing is too slow and I have been trying
to troubleshoot it, but thought I would ask for some opinions.
I can get about 8k on the rpm's but I cant get over 65-75 mph. the
sled is winding out and it sounds ok...I just cant push it any faster.
I have adjusted the secondary clutch so the belt is about 1/8 too a
1/4 inch above the top of the wheel...that seemed to make a difference
out of the hole, but i seem to be losing on top end. I am waiting to
get a compression tester to check the compression...I threw new plugs
in...I was going to change the fuel filter...maybe its not getting
enough gas.
I put the sled on a stand so the track was free wheeling and I can run
it up over 100mph like that...if that means anything.
the sled does seem to lug just a hair from a stop...I think it should
respond a bit quicker.
Any suggestions?

CHECK TO SEE IF THE CLUTCHING IS STOCK. AND IF THE SECONDARY SPRING IS IN THE RIGHT SPOT.
PRIMARY: GOLD SPRING, AND THE WEIGHTS ARE 10M 49.5GRMS.
SECONDARY SETUP SOULD BE A RED SPRING WITH 34 DEGREE HELIX
SPRING SHOULD BE IN THE 2ND HOLE.

when you get scared on a sled , you know you've done something right!

snow is here finally. wheres the cheap gas??

If it helps I have a 96 XLT Special and I get closer to 9,000 RPM's.

Thats weired becuase our friend has a '99 XLT SP Golden edition (he ones a body shop and put on about $900 in gold leaf) pretty cool if i do say so... but any ways he can esaly hit about 95 MPH and he is a 200+ lbs plus rider. so i think it is sometheing with the sled i would have it looked at.

is your gearing stock? stock gearing is 21 top 39 bottom.
get a magic marker, put a line on your primary faces, take it out for a test run and see what mark is left, this tells you if your clutches are shifting out all the way. a worn out belt will cause clutches not to shift out and with 5000 miles you might have to rebuild your clutches.

Thanks for responding guys.
The clutching is all stock. I took the secondary apart and cleaned it all up. the spring was ok and it was in the second hole.
I checked the compression and I got about 110 on 2 cylinders and about 95 on the cylinder next to the clutch. Anyone think this warrants a ring job?

Definately looks like you need a ring job and possibly a honing on the jugs.
I have a 97 xc 600 the supposed modified xlt engine, this spring the compression was 128 pto,127mid and 128pto. I think 130 or 135 is highest on stock engine.
Was the engine warm or ice cold when compression was checked??

as far as speed I also had 95 xlt not special it would do over 105mph on the speedo, sold it w 5000miles and would still go like a bat outta hell.

I changed my clutch setup on my 97 xc and wow what a diff.

blue/white primary approx: 43-4400 eng 8400 top end.
10-m5 weights
yellow secondary w/42-34 helix
woke up the bottom end (need more picks curr 96) on ice and hardpack will dig a trench at least 50-60 feet so plenty of power in that engine.
