I did a search but suprisingly couldn't find any direct info on the octane switch.

Both our '04 700RMK and '03 800RMK has the premium/regular octane switch and I am curious if it is worth running premium? I have only ran premium through my 800 but I have ran both through the 700 and I didn't really feel much of a difference, but I only rode it for about 5 minutes with regular.

Is premium better for the engine itself? You late model Edge guys....do you run premium or regular and why? How much power difference does Polaris claim?

I tried both regular and premium and never noticed much of a difference either. My buddy says it makes noticable difference on his sled but ive never drivin his sled when he ran regular. im also curious to here what anyone has to say.
another one of my friends screwd up his ignition and drove around with it stuck on regular when he was really running premium in it and it still seemed to run the same

The sleds are designed to run on 91 octane, you are basically detuning the timing to allow safe running on regular. You will lose some performance using the switch, how you ride will tell you how much. On my 800, I do notice a difference if I am climbing something steep or going across the meadow. I run premium because I do not want to take a chance of detonation ruining a piston, I have enough to worry about with my crank having 2500 miles on it without failing!

the regular switch is basically just for when your in a bind and cant get premium fuel. I noticed fuel mileage between the two and premium switch got the better.
being a 800 it already has really high compresion so you should always be running good fuel.

when you get scared on a sled , you know you've done something right!

snow is here finally. wheres the cheap gas??

I kind of figured Polaris designed the engine and selected the compression ratio with 91 octane in mind but I wanted to double check.
If they get slightly better mileage with premium I guess that will offset the additional cost anyway.

The 800cc engine has more compression than the 700cc engine?

I ran regular in my 01 this winter because when I run regular I get free fuel and couldn't tell a difference, but that was just playing on the trails since there wasn't enough snow off the trail to play in. I'm not going to keep doing it though, I'm draining it out and running premium from here on out. As BCDan said, it's not really worth the risk of running bad fuel and ruining your motor.

A note on the reg/prem fuel switch. The timing retard is 4 degs and is only at higher (> 7000) rpm. So you wont notice a difference just tooling around.

Guys, the 800's run just fine on regular. If you want to go out and play Joe ice racer or mogul masher and get 100% from your sled, add premium, and flip the switch. Running premium full time does nothing but make the gas companies richer. Your call, run what you like.

On the deto. thing, consider that this is much more likely to happen at mid range speeds (5600-5900 rpm) in warmer ( like 30-35F) temps. From what I have experienced when this is happening, there appears to be no difference which fuel you are running. It's happened to me on both.

Also consider this. When gasing up at out of the way filling stations, you run a higher risk of getting bad fuel when purchasing premium - due to the fact that it has most likely been sitting in the tank much longer due to the difference in selling price, and the fact that cars/trucks/whatever are buying regular much more frequently.

AND regular fuel runs cooler.....

I suspect the 91 min. octane advertising from the manufacturers is wishfull thinking to minimize failures under warranty. Kinda like saying the only injection oil they'll warranty is their own.....which doesn't hold much water either.
