I'm not hearing horrible things about the new Polaris 550s. However, that does little to take the sting from those who have been bitten by failures in older versions.
I have written Polaris numerous times about their void in the smaller horsepower fan segment enumerating the virtues of the old reliable engines they once powered with. Apparently it must be embarrassing to them that they replaced what was good with something as faulty as the 550. (I suspect that their embarrassment may be grounded in their failure to do the proper R&D, leaving that, instead, to be done by their customers.)
In any case, though I've managed to squeeze over 8000 miles from my 2001 Supersport - because of three top ends that I have been competent to do, I still do not regard these 550s as trustworthy (or cost-effective) machines. And when I go into caribou country in a couple of weeks, I believe it will be the very old, worn 488 fan which goes, rather than the well-running 550 which has 1/3 as many miles.
