I would like to know how the spring in the primary and the weights affect what happens in the clutch. Like what a different color of spring will do. Wether it has more or less stiffness and lighter verse heavier weights. Also what does the helix do in the secondary along with the spring and the different holes. How do you tear apart the secondary to change the helix. I have an Indy 600. It has no take off. The motor is running fine. The clutching that is in it is not stock. It is what was given to me when i bought all the parts. I bought a stock spring and when I was at the dealer he asked if it was a short or tall spring in the primary. I thought it was the tall but when I got home it looked like it was the short one. How much should the spring be compressed to go into the primary, if any? I dont have the original clutch that was on the 600 motor. It is a polaris clutch and i think is a P-85 but im not sure. Any help with any of this would help. Thanks!!

Do yourself and others a favor and buy a book.. It is called Olav Aaen's Basic Clutch Tuning Handbook. It is an awesome book that covers most aspects of clutching and how everything relates to each other. Clutching/gearing are the key elements to catching the big checkered flag and the end of the race. ( I believe). I will try to help though, here goes, first of all color is only an indicator to what spring is in. Tension is the key. stiffer primary will keep your revs up. The heavier the weights the less rpms you will have. The secondary holes are for tension of the spring. These effect how your shift happens and how fast the belt will drop down in the secondary. The more tension you put on the spring the more your motor will keep its revs up but the efficency will be lost if too much. If your motor will handle some steeper angles then good but too much or not enough will cause other concerns. See why the book it a good choice. I had a 95 XCR a few years ago and played with the clutching for a whole winter before I was happy. Good luck.

Where do i get the book. I didnt see it in Dennis Kirk. Havent looked in Hi-Performance Engineering. Thanks for the basic rundown Valleyman. Can you try and explain to me how to take the helix out of the secondary. My shop manual says to push down on the helix and remove the circlip. The helix dont want to seem to go down. Are you supposed to twist the two sheaves and them pull the circlip?
