I was just wondering what I should be expecting my 98 XC 700 to top out at.
So far (over the lake) I've been able to reach a consistant 105mph. I believe the sled has VForce reeds and is clutched. Everything else is stock.
Does this sound right?

Hey 40, I was just wondering the same thing. I have 24/40 gears and the best I have seen is 110 this weekend on hardpack road on the speedo. I think I might be running out of gear though.

Racer, You are not running out of gear. I have seen 119 on my speedo on right conditions on a long flat and fast road on a good cold day. About 108 or so on a lake. My gearing was stock also. 24/40. :D SWRules

You're not running out of gear. I have a 2000 xc sp with a slp twin pipe and heads. Had it 128 on a lake last week. Took about a mile

top speed ,ideal conditions,118 on speedo 24-40.

I looked in the 2000 polaris performance manual and it says the following with 24-40 gearing: at 7750 rpms -99.9; at 8000rpms- 103.1; at 8250- 106.3 and thats at 1:1 shift out (nearly Ideal). Don't believe the speedo! I run 24-39 gearing and in 1000 feet the speedo is around 120+ but on radar 107-108. the faster you go the further off they usually are! Radar is not perfect but I tend to believe it more than speedo.

Thanks for the replies all.
So if my speedo says 105, then most likely I'm only doing around 100.. usually 4-5 miles off.

in all honesty,i would say 105 speedo is closer to a Real speed of 95-96.polaris is close to 10% high on speedo,
Now ski doos are pretty close to being accurate. ride side by side to one ,and the doo will register a lower speed

Polaris speedo's seem to have a 10% fudge factor. My sled reads 103mph, and it radared at 97mph. Brothers 700ves reads 114mph and radared at 110mph.

Hey smokin 700, I was thinking about going to 24-39 gears instead of the stock 24-40's, did you do anything special to yours that you decided to gear up, or is it a 700 ves? Just curious

racer254,Its a 98 700 but I did install a set of ves cylinders. The 24-40 gearing was fine for trail riding but would run out of legs on the lake! I'm considering 25-39 just to see if it will pull it. with out snow in MN this sled just keeps getting to be more of a lake racer... plenty lakes! 24-39 is hardly a big change on ice as far as low end but is good for a couple mph on top. I've trail ridden this ratio and it does alright. It's more noticeable on tight trails but not bad. The ves sort of makes up for the low end loss maybe. So far I added slp twin pipes, bored carbs, shaved head .020, v-force reeds, boost bottle, wiseco pistons, remapped ignition and clutching. My old cylinders were ported but the ves set is stock for now. Runs very strong. I put a .500 inch drag track on it this year with 30 degree picks- much lighter! The new track made a huge difference getting to speed quickly. Not a huge gain on top end vs. stock track. I still trail ride this sled when conditions allow, now I just have to change tracks and let up the limiter straps.
