What motor will fit in a 96 ext 580? I want to start building a motor for next season and I want to know what size engines will fit in it. :D
And what rear suspension will fit in it?

I heard that the 550 and 580 have the same mounting points.

do you know what would fit in a 97 zl 440

I'm not sure, but I think that 440 goes all the way back to the '90 Prowler. If that's the case that motor was used in the Prowler, Couger, Pantera, Cheetah, Bearcat, and maybe a few more I'm forgetting.

I'm not positive troy but on a 97zl440 engine mounts you should be able to put a 500 or 600 in there. If nothing else the mounts could be swapped out cause the frames and mounting points are the same.


996ext580 I think your going to be limited to the 550 and 580 but I would check and see if the older style 550 and 580 is the same case as they are using in the new ZL550 and 580. If its the same you should be able to switch to a 500 or 600 by just swapping engine mounts. www.brownsleisureworld.com has all the parts diagrams looking through there is a good way to find out what used the same part numbers. As far as suspensions go you can put in a new 121 fastrack we just got done doing it to my friends 96ext580 but i'll warn you its not easy. You have to make bigger mounting plates and drill new holes he still has the templates he made i think so I can get you the dimensions if you need.

I was on that website (www.brownsleisureworld.com, thanks for letting me know about this site) and it turn out the 95 zr700 twin :) has the same motor mounts as my ext 580. What years were the 700 twins made in and what models. In the spring I want to find a cheap 700 twin to rebuild and build-up. How tough are the 700 twins and what are the spec for this motor.

Do a search in the archives and you should find plenty on the 700. The 700 was in the Wildcat (91-96, 99-00), ZR700 (94-95).

You should be able to make just about any motor fit, but if you don't want to fabricate the motor mounts then you'll probably have fewer choices. You'd have a real sleeper with a 900 efi under the hood! If you go to a bigger motor you'll also have to change the springs and shocks to handle the extra weight.
