: Porting?

I was wondering if sending the cylinders away to get ported was worth it for a 500.
-Also, does porting mean just getting the exhaust ports ported out?
-And what does polishing mean??

thanks for clearing this up :)

Porting would probably give you an extra 5-7 horse on your sled if done at a reputable shop. Forget about their 10-15 hp gains that they might advertise, you won't see it on your 500 and keep it safe.

Also, does porting mean just getting the exhaust ports ported out?

Not necessarily. It could, depending on what your ports need; but typically will mean reshaping and re-sizing your intake, exhaust and transfer ports.

And what does polishing mean

Polishing use to mean someone smoothing your existing ports and cleaning the transition areas.

That definition was used for many years until engine builders found that removing the porosity in the ports decreased the charge/mixture droplet collection on the walls, which slightly decreased horse.

Very few shops offer true, old school polishing since demand is very small. The present definition has changed nowadays to mean cleaner; which translates to removing manufacturing variances.

I have a Hooper Big Bore trail kit for your sled that would wake it up. The kit is 140 hp and is very reliable and trailable. The kit comes with Hooper cylinders, head, pistons, twin pipes, timing key, silencer, and Hooper adjustable weights. I would take your stock cylinders, head, pistons and exhaust and $800 for the kit, or $1200 outright. I figure you are going to spend at least $200 on the porting so you could spend another $600 and get 40 hp more. call me at 419-392-0791 and or e-mail me at mrholshot@hotmail.com if you are interested. I live near Toledo, OH.
