I grew up on snowmobiles but just got back in this year after a couple year break so please pardon the questions folks. Just some stuff i used to know but forgot. My buddy has smoked 3 of his belts on his ZRT 800 and one on my buddies Formula III 700. I know it's a uncommon coincedance but why are 3 belts getting smoked on the Cat? Is it the belt or is he rankin on it too much?

You need to give more info on what they were doing when it happened. There are too many ways for this to happen. But once you smoke them once, then throw them away. Unless someone has some tips. Sometimes people smoke them by not spinning a frozen track before taking off in the morning, or loading them on a trailer, etc. I know one seld that had a bad crank that ate belts, and if the clutches aren't aligned it will eat belts as well. Hope this helps.

Well actually the first three he was stuck and i think he just beat the crap out of them too much. the other i think he said he hit a jump and laid on the throttle in the air. thanks for the info

If the track is hung up, goosing it aint going to do anything but smoke a belt... i spin the track when i get back at night to clear off any snow and i sometimes will have to chip away ice in the AM... we rode through one wash out last week and alot of guys didnt clear the track so we toasted a couple of belts. spinning the track in the air shouldnt do it unless they really get them moving then rapid brake them.

Misuse of horsepower seems most likely in your situation. Assuming the track is not stuck, proper use of the throttle will minimize belt burn. We don't use high horsepower machines but we often pull sleds which outweight the machine and rider. Being easy on the throttle at the right time or romping it at others allows belts to last for a considerable time - thousands of miles usually. I often like to change the gearing by a tooth exchanging a small amount of top speed for better starting torque.

I have an 02 mxz700z. I have smoked three belts in about 500miles.
The belts start to squeal at low rpm's. When I look at the belt the inner cord is being pulled out of the belt. other than that the belt looks ok. The moter has been off the sled. Maybe clutch alignment? How hard is it to align the clutches and how much time? Any other possible causes or do u think it is clutch alignment also. Thanks for your help.
