GPS Mount pics - How have you done yours?
Here's some pics of how I mounted my GPS over the weekend. I would have liked to mount it about an inch lower, but didn't have the right metal around. I found a piece of scrap aluminum and here's what I came up with.

Hope this helps anyone else with their ideas as well. I have the GPS wired into the electric from the sled.

Great job. Good idea. I like it.

Does the big bumps or vibration make it hard to see or mess it up any?

I really havent had a chance to use it yet mounted to the sled. I mounted it to the handlebars and snug against the handlebar padding to reduce vibrations. I has originally thought about mounting it on the hood plastic, but thought that it'd crack the plastic when I jumped or hit ditches too hard. I think this is pretty solid, but I guess I'll see on my trip to Munising the end of Feb.

Note that the GPS keeps track of so much information and makes it available to you in so many ways. I like the high speed indicator. :p

Works wonderful in the truck, unfortunately my sled is 3.5 hours away from here at the cottage so I have to wait until this weekend to mount it.

Hey Artic ZRT, Did you ever start using your GPS? How do you like it? Got a mount figured out for the sled this year?

Cheers,
joel

Yes, I used it on my vacation to Myrtle Beach marking all the points of interest. I am selling it now because I got it for snowmobiling and my days are done. I loved it.

What do you have for a GPS ZRT600?

Downriver Thunder
06-12-2003, 05:29 PM
It's a Garmin Legend. It is practically brand new. Comes with copy of US topographical map, US road and recreation, computer data cord, rechargable batteries and charger, vehicle charger, vehicle mount and I even have a custom made snowmobile power supply up at the cabin for it that I haven't installed on the sled yet. I plugs right into any Cat accessory plug or can be spliced into any other make and you just plug the vehicle cord into the box and you're good to go. Shipping free.

Legend = $200
Software = $200
Mount = $30
Cord = $15
Sled supply = $30 in parts.
Batteries & charger = $50

Make an offer.

Anyplace you have a 12v accessory. You need a rectifier though and that is what this sled power supply is.

Yes, it's an Etrex Legend. Sled Dogg is gonna look at it today to see if he wants it. I'll let you know if he takes it.

Hey guys, was browsing Circuit City's page, and found this handlebar mount. (http://www.circuitcity.com/detail.jsp?c=1&b=g&department=Audio+and+Video+Accessories&category=GPS+Accessories&AccPop=false&oid=37549) Would be great if this worked on the sleds.

Jim, I have the Etrex Legend....it's a great, little GPS for sledding. If nobody buys that package, you ought to jump on that deal. I bought all my mounts at Bass Pro Shop in St.Charles. Ram makes some "ball" mounts that allow you to swivel it in any direction and angle. The handle bar mount they sell is small and doesn't interfere at all with the handle bar pad. A couple turns of the mount handle and the "ball" is released; letting you take your GPS with you when you go inside.

How are things going?

Arcticzrt600,

Would you be willing to sell anything seperate? I have the unit, however I do need the software and or maybe the batteries.

Jim (if your reading), I'd be willing to buy this together with you and we could both use the software. Just a thought.

Sorry, let me clarify;

I'd buy the software if you're willing to sell is seperate, or if Jim Fritch is up for it, we could buy the entire lot and share the software. Get it? Got it? Good!

Jon :D

Hey Jon, I've got the Garmin 176C with several hundred dollars worth of software. My cousing Scott is buying the exact model for his boat too. When we get together sometime, I could show you all the software. I've also got two instruction videos for my GPS, which I highly recommend. The videos really help out.

Joel, I'd be interested in that software. Since mines a Garmin also, I'm sure it would be compatible. Is it illegal to let me download that and then give it back to you? :( Let me know what you have and if you'd let me borrow it.

Thanks, Jon

You can't just download it, you have to use a program like clone cd to copy the cd's. None of the maps download to the computer, the program runs off of cd's.

Yea, I knew that. I just used the wrong computer terminology. I was hoping to borrow the CD to load up my GPS directly.

Thanks, Jon

Just velcro, that's all it takes.

I could have bought the base mount kit, but why waste money and add weight when Velcro does the trick?

The unit already comes with the velcro loops on the bottom, so all I had to do is mount a hook strip wherever you want the unit. I use it in my boats, and truck too.

It may be possible that velcro will work with other brands & models, so consder it as an option. Avoid spending cash only to add weight to your sled whenever you can! :D

Lol, it's important to know where you are when you're sledding up and down your neighborhood streets.

In the garden mostly. It's been a busy Spring for me. Just bought an AC 250 4x4 for some summer fun, but like everyone else I can't wait for winter to come back. It's sick.

Question about the Ram handlebar mount......is there an opening in the back for the DC power source cable? I just ordered a Magellan Meridian Color GPS and am looking for a handlebar mount that will also allow me to connect to the DC power source. thanks
