: Losing Faith In Amsoil!
SXman 02-06-2003, 10:47 PM Amsoil has many things to brag about, but use in power-valved engines is'nt one of them! As a veteran Yamaha Tech, I see power-valves that have been coated with every castor and synthetic oil known to man. Castor oils reek havok with carbon build-up....but as a synthetic, Amsoil runs a close second! Motul, Klotz, or the new Synthetic Spectro are the only ones that do as they claim.........lubricate...not bake! just my .02$
sled-head 02-06-2003, 10:50 PM Who are you?? and how do you know this??
Mighty RX-1 02-06-2003, 10:53 PM I ran amsoil in all of my machZ's and never had to clean my rave valves, ever!
Sharkey 02-07-2003, 12:24 AM I would bet even though you never cleaned the raves, or absolutely had to, that you could have polished them up on the outer tips after a 1000 miles, all oils and fuels mixed make alittle soot on outer tips were exhaust pressure is not as good at self cleaning. I had 3 Mach z's also and ran synthetic after breakin and cleaned Raves regularly. It picked up my 660 ft. times on bare ice.
Jim85IROC 02-07-2003, 08:12 AM Well, it's official. 35,765 people that praise how clean their power valves are with the Amsoil compared to all the other stuff, and 1 guy that says it's the worst one out there. I think I'm sticking with my Amsoil.
ZR Sled Head 02-07-2003, 08:38 AM I'll second that Jim, Amsoil has worked mint in my sled with zero valve issue.
***********AMSOIL RULES...GREAT PRODUCT/GREAT PRICE********
:D :D :D :D :D
Rick.
so far i have no complaintes with amsiol but i did have a valve sticking after 1000 miles so i had to clean them.
MikeD 02-07-2003, 08:44 AM Pheww!! I' glad you guys stand behing your Amsoil. After many years and mile with Bombi Synthetic, the price became too much and I just bought my first case of Amsoil.
CATTRACKS 02-07-2003, 08:54 AM HEY GUY'S,
when you are using this AMSOIL are you leaving your oil pumps at the factory settings or are you turning them down?
Isee guys racing in the summer premixing this stuff at 80:1 to100:1and their running strong.
Machzzzz1 02-07-2003, 08:58 AM HAHA. Thats a good one SX.
Ive only run Amsoil in my Mach Z since day one and never needed to clean the rave valves, ever. Not to mention it has 6000km on it and still makes excellent power and perfect compression.
I also have a 1998mxz with 10500km on it and only at the start of this year when it had 9500km on it did I check the Rave valves for the first time and they were a little dirty but still clean. That was with castrol synthetic but I now run amsoil in it and have no problems.
I know countless of others that run it and work on motors and they all say its the best.
It has the best cold weather performance and is the healthest thing you can put into your machine.
Check your oil pump or carb settings becasue something is wrong on your machine.
green 02-07-2003, 09:32 AM Does anyone out there use Shell Advance synthetic? I started using that and I'm not having any powervalve issues yet. It also pours alot better that AC APV oil. I'm going to check them on the weekend to see how they look.
deep-lugs 02-07-2003, 09:43 AM Well i've been a hard core user of amsoil for about 5 years now,i run the stuff in my boat and watched the temp drop 15 degrees i run the v-twin oil in my harley 2001 ultra classic efi, motor never ran cooler or smoother,i ran the regular 2 cycle synthetic in my mxz 600-800,cleaned the valves every 1000 miles some carbon build-up not too bad.I just switched to artic cat 2003 800 efi.1000 miles on sled ,ran amsoil first 600 miles valves plugged with loads of carbon, ran cat apv oil synthetic the other 400 miles valves are clean, maybe its just cats dont like to drink amsoil,i'm stickin with cat apv oil for my sled, but my other toys are amsoil.....

Does anyone out there use Shell Advance synthetic?
I was going to, but Amsoil is much cheaper.
LB700 02-07-2003, 11:47 AM I used 3 liters of Shell synthetic, and had to clean the valves immediately -- VERY GUMMY! Undeside of pistons were all gummed too.
No problems with Bombardier mineral oil, but I did with Bombardier synthetic -- same thing -- gummy valves.
Used Amsoil 2000 in our MX bikes with good sucess. Now using Ipone in the bikes and it's AWESOME -- the best smelling oil ever!
vapourtrail 02-07-2003, 04:59 PM has anyone tried that blue marble yet ??? :D
junior 02-07-2003, 05:35 PM right now i am using TORCO but changing to AMSOIL right away i'll see how it works with my 98 ZR 600 EFI and F5
IndySKS 02-07-2003, 07:18 PM While we are on the Amsoil topic :
I am not bashing the product but would like to ask a question and see if anyone else has had this problem,
Last fall (2001 ) I bought a 10 liter jug of amsoil synthetic from a local dealer, he gets it in bulk and puts it in 2 gallon gas cans. This oil has always bee stored with the lid on in my garage. I used all but about 2 liters last season , left it on the self in the garage. We went on our anual vacation ride this past january in Northern Ontario, the second morning I went to fill my sled up with oil and it was lumpy , kinda like coaqulated ( sp ) blood . I stopped pouring imediatly and used the oil i brought for the wifes sled ( shell advance) for the rest of the week . Now it was -36C at the time but I wouldn't expect it to lump up like that even in that cold. Kinda makes me wonder if it was lumpy in the can what did it look like in my oil resevoir ? And how well was it getting to the pump and motor. Both the oil jug and the sled were in a unheated garage all night too. The shell advance poured just like normal at that temperature.
I will use the rest of the oil in a pre mix for my chainsaw and have already bought a new jug of amsoil synthetic for the next ride. Exhaust vales are such a pain having to use synthetic oil to keep them clean. I have always used Shell advance in my other sleds and still do in my wifes that has no exhaust valves.
Anyhow looking forward to your comments and possible reasons why this stuff went lumpy.
SXman 02-07-2003, 07:26 PM Looks like I struck a Nerve with a few of you, and I'm not surprised! One of you asked "who am I"? Well ....Now that I have everyones attention I'll tell you. I'm a well known technition in the Northeast and as far south as Florida. I've been working on, diagnosing, repairing, and modifying 2-cycle and 4 cycle engines for the past 28 years. Certified as a Yamaha, Suzuki, Harley-Davidson, and Arctic Cat Factory Trained Technition, and some day...[fingers crossed]...will be working for Yamaha Motor Corp. USA, as a Technical Feild Rep. Now, all BS aside... I'm not saying Amsoil is a bad oil, it is a good oil, just not in every machine. Bombardier and Polaris are the only two power-valved engines that don't suffer the carbon build-up as severe as Yamaha and Cat. For whatever reason, a power-valve that is actuated by exhuast pressure stays cleaner longer. Cable operated versions are not as fortunate, they corrode quickly, and quallity oil will prove itself here. Amsoil in these machines builds up as fast if not worst than even the cheap stuff like Quaker-State, Citco, Pennsoil, etc.. I clean and check as many power-valves in the coarse of a season as you guys look at your watch. I see all the manufactorers sleds using all the oils availiable to the public, I'm only telling what I see and experiance. As I stated earlier, many Amsoil customers have become discouraged with the performance of this oil, switched to Klotz, and have had much better results. Myself... I've used Klotz ever since the cans were white, and needed a can opener to open them. Cost of product also defines quallity within it. Is a Maytag better than a GE?...is a Minnolta better than a Samsung? How about a Lexus versus a Chevy [oops, I meant Ford] ?? You get what you pay for. ....let the wars continue.... SX
sled-head 02-07-2003, 07:40 PM thats a good response. I dont use Amsoil anyway I use Cat APV sythetic but am making the switch to Motul ((maybe))
DamageInc 02-07-2003, 07:54 PM Sxman, I have been running Klotz in my new Cat 600, and my valves started sticking around 1000 miles. I don't think that's anything to brag about, but that did include a tank of break-in oil. If you are a Cat tech, then you know how difficult those damn things are to get out once they are dirty enough to stick. BTW, I found a great tool for those little allen screws that like to strip, Snap-On extractor# EX-4. No drilling, just tap into the screw head and turn it out, works great.
caper711cc 02-07-2003, 07:58 PM Been using Shell advance for two seasons.Up to that point
had used nothing but cat oil,but it stinks so bad it was causing me
to start coughing and hacking ,so I switched from apv to shell
and never looked back.My 711 is a non-power valve motor.No
more stinking clothes like the cat oil.
Cape Breton stock......................We were out today put on
150 mile got pic`s but no printer yet, when i do will post the Cape to
you..................
SXman 02-07-2003, 08:13 PM Arctic Cat recomends cleaning the power-valves every 1000 miles, so you're at the point where there dirty and need service. In my own personal opinion, I'd be cleaning them at least every 500 miles. Yes it sucks, but when you do it a few times, and they come out easy because you did'nt wait too long, you can do the job in about half an hour. All the 03 Cat engines have gone to the quillotine style valves...much easier to deal with! The Snap-On EX-4 is a handy little tool...I've got the complete set.

You are absolutely right, it is so much easier to do it more often than to wait until they NEED it. You are also SO right about the round style valves being a terrible design. Did you mean ALL 2003 models or all except the ZL600?
kennypope 02-08-2003, 06:11 AM What is the difference between amsoil racing and the regular synthetic?
Been running amsoil in my rev from the 600 km mark, now i have 3000+kms and so far so good.
What makes the racing version of amsoil so expensive? And to add to that what makes Bomb synthetic so expensive, and it doesn't seem to do any better job than amsoil. SX was saying you get what you pay for!So tell me!
dooman 02-08-2003, 06:28 AM sx I would still like to know who you are myself?
ZR Sled Head 02-08-2003, 07:30 AM Amsoil recomends you use their regular oil for all applications except all out racing.
I had a fair bit of valve gumming issue with APV oil but in the 2000 plus miles since the valves have been all but spotless (very light residue) and required nothing more than a wipe after spraying carb cleaner.
I do however have concerns about this lumpy pour and have sent e-mails off to several dealers asking what the hecks going on. I suggest others do an Amsoil web search and send off the same question to several dealers and ask the same question.
Has anyone else contacted Amsoil and whats their response been?
Rick.

has anyone tried that blue marble yet ??? :D
Who can afford it? :D IIRC, it's closer to $20/litre than not.
DamageInc 02-08-2003, 03:29 PM Amsoil2000 has a higher shear strength than the regular synthetic but it requires higher combustion temps to get a more complete burn. Average trail useage won't do this, so it is recommended for race use, regular amsoil is for trail use.
SXman 02-08-2003, 07:10 PM If I found "lumps and clumps" in my oil I'd do two things; have my eye sight checked first, then I'd siphon the baby-poop out of my injector tank and fill it with a quallity oil !!! :cussing:
sled-head 02-09-2003, 03:54 PM I would like to know what your thoughts are on Motul synthetic....Like I said above I have access to this brand at a way discounted price......$25 tax paid Canadian per 4L jug. This guy swears by it and tells me my valves will look like new at the end of the season...Is there truth in this??
SWRules Has anyone ever used the blue marble oil? If yes how did it work?
paidncash 02-09-2003, 06:58 PM I had over 3000miles on my MachZ and never had to clean the rave valves once. I used klotz exclusivly in that sled and love the stuff. :inlove:
portage 02-09-2003, 08:58 PM Klotz Techniplate. Clean valves and nothing smells sweeter!
