I have an '02 MXZ 700 sport with about 1,000 miles I got a great price on a mechanical reverse kit and figured I would go for it. Well, every thing went textbook except the chain case has an annoying whine which increases with speed. My wife had an '96 Grand tour and I don't remember it whining. I even disassembled it, inspected all the bearings, chain condition, even pulled the lower case bearing and double checked everything. It still whines! I but 150 miles on it yesterday. It seems to run and work great. Is it the nature of the beast? I plan on going to Canada next week and don't want to be riding 800-1000 miles on a time bomb or listening to it whine. I'm thinking of removing it. Any comments or ideas?

I have a friend with a 2000 F deluxe (ZX Chassis) 600, and his has a wine to it.

I would not worry about it, and I would think it will get quieter with time.

Maybe try a thicker lube?

In the gang I ride with we have a 97 F III ,96 SLS,99 670DLX. and a 96 grand touring. All have reverse and none of these sleds whine.I also installed reverse on my old 94 STX and didn't notice any different sounds afterwards.

I personnally think that any time you add someting like reverse it shouldn't change anything else unless it is not working properly or something was forgotten ( maybe you have to change something else to accomadate, I don't know) I know that adding pipes and stuff like that changes the sound and performance of your sled but if i started hearing my chaincase whine I think it is trouble waiting to happen

just my .02 cents
I have never done it but it doesn't sound right.

The orginal owner of my 01 800mxzx had the mechanical reverse installed by a local dealer. The reverse does not whine at any speed even after I took it all apart to replace the track. Check the shims and make certain the sprockets are aligned properly in both forward and reverse.

I have a 2000 Formula Z 700 with Mechanical Reverse and it whines slightly in reverse gear only.

I have over 2000 miles on it and I have had NO problems at all.
