yet another chapter in the saga of the Pantera or as my old man would call it... "the maron lemon"...... the chaincase was making noise on friday and she quit moving.... well i finally took it apart tonight and discovered that the shaft sheered at the end and seperated where the shaft meets the interior sprocket.... in the process it also took out a couple of gears.... well it turns out "we think" that the bearing that sits on the shaft in the gearcase seized causing the shaft break.... there was lube in the gearcase so we are all still shaking our heads.... i should have some pics on friday to show you of what happened.... i am wondering if anyone has had a similar problem with there 2002-2003 cats.... this thing is a real lemon and im going to call cat on friday to see how far i can get with them as to covering thr parts.... its not that hard of a job but the parts i calculated to be over $240.00.... it just makes me :withstupid: :cussing:

My brother in law lost two on his zl500 and another friend lost it on his pantera1000. The zl we replace with one from a ZR which is different. the ZR shaft has 2 drivers and 2 idlers on it as well the end has a snout that comes out and is held with a nut instead of being hollow and a bolt going in .

Did you get the fuel problems fixed? Was it clogged?

My dad bought a new 2002 600 EFI pantera this year, we call it the trailer queen. We've met up in Michigan for 2 trips so far, and he's only been able to put 200 miles on it. It all started with 0.2 miles on the odometer. It wouldn't rev above 4500 rpms. We horsed around with it for over an hour, checking throttle safety, etc. We checked the diagnostic LED and it doesn't see a problem. All of the sudden it starts running fine. Same the second day. He took it back home and it ran fine. The dealer was no help.

We just got back from the UP. It only went about 25ft before dying up there. Luckily he had a backup. He had to ride a ZR500 XC for 450+ miles. He was pissed. I talked to him this morning, he drove straight to his dealer in chicago from the UP. He told them he doesn't ever want to see the P.O.S. again. He's going to trade it! The mechanic thinks it is the throttle position sensor.

I'll be glad to see him get something smaller, its not fun moving that heavy b*tch around when it dies.....

Yes you are right that sled is a monster to push around.... luckily we were only about 200 feet from the cabin when it happened.... i did fix the fuel inline problem.... something clogged the line between the gas tank and the shut off valve.... its not that uncommon so I was hoping that would be the least of my problems.... I havent had alot of luck with this pantera... despite all the work i have had done on it I still think its a great machine to ride.... it is very comfrortable and although heavy the weight is not felt like some of the big ski-doos.... oh well back to the drawing board... i want to order a pantera 800 this year but i am nervous about spending big bucks to have these problems

My father in law HAD the 1000 pantera, and he couldn't keep a crank in it. I think he bent 3 of them. Talk about heavy! That thing was a tank. Nice to ride, with all the luxuries of a Cadilac, but it wasn't a good sled. I thought it had something to do with the hp and the weight, but if similar things are happening on the smaller ones, it can't be that.

I'm curious to know how the new 800 efi pantera's are, because he is considering buying one. Nice sleds, but I can't understand why they had so much trouble.

Sorry to hear about the probs with the Panteras. The 800EFI is what I plan on getting for the misses this summer/fall. Hopefully I won't experience any of these headaches, but thanks for the heads-up of what to look for if I hear wierd noises. Been down that road with my ZRT, started hearing this klunking noise, ended up being jackshaft bearing going bad...but changed it before it did any other damage. Good luck PB, your problems with this sled have to clear up pretty soon. And that dealer better help you out...is it the same dealer as the studding issue???
