: Another Sledding Accident
2slow2go 02-18-2003, 10:48 AM Well, here's another one. A buddy of mine left a friends house (normally 15 minute ride), and called about 45 minutes later, barely abel to talk.
What happened? Left a friends house at 9:00PM (no Drinking involved) at 9:45PM he calls, and says he had an accident, he was laying in the middle of the lake by himself (thank God he had a cell phone).
Anyways, he must of been cruising at a good speed, when he hit a snow drift (by the way Montreal hasn't had to much snow, so the lake is ice surface, with very little snow) well, after some friends and myself spending about an hour on the ice with my truck picking up the parts, we finally got it home... Here's whats left, it's actually not to bad the suspension is not bent.
The rider was in hospital, but his okay at home now.

Downriver Thunder 02-18-2003, 10:55 AM Damn, that looks bad. How's he doing now?
Machzzzz1 02-18-2003, 10:58 AM Wow.
Did he give you any crash details.
I think im gonna pack my cell phone more often now. That probably saved his life.
vapourtrail 02-18-2003, 01:06 PM :cussing: that's crap...............all that money. :(
TallCool1 02-18-2003, 01:21 PM It must have been a pretty big drift, huh?? :( Hope he recovers fine.
I always have my phone with me. I really like that the Collett communicators have an aux plug for a phone....then I can use the phone without taking the helmet off. Works like the hans-free units, that EVERYONE should use in a car, instead of holding the phone while driving.
2slow2go 02-18-2003, 01:43 PM He's doing fine, the accident happened last Thursday he's at home, can't walk very well, and his face is all swallon.
As for the drift, it wasn't huge, but it was the only one we saw while we where doing the clean-up. To cross the lake it's about 2 kms, the drift was right in the middle, so we think he was pretty much at top speed when he hit (hit only the left ski, forcing the sled to flip and roll across the ice, we couldn't estimate the amount of time the sled rolled, but the distance from the drift to where the sled came to rest was a good 40 to 60 feet away. If I can I'll get a picture of the helmet, it's cracked as well.
I never ride without my cell phone, you absolutly never know when you'll need it.
Sorry I couldn't get to many details, I don't think he remembers to much about it. All he said was he was flying accross the ice, and at the last second he saw the drift, lean'd back and floored it, hoping the skies would lift past the drift.
caper711cc 02-18-2003, 02:18 PM Glad to here he`s alright. The sled can be fixed .I always
wear a good cat helmet, terk vest and a cell.Cause its taken
longer to heal than it did before(that age thing mid 30`s).
Cape Breton stock................................
MikeD 02-18-2003, 02:48 PM here's wishing your friend a speedy recovery....
I was driving down the lake my cottage is on a couple of weeks ago and i was going about 140 km/h and i hit a drift and the front of the sled went straight in the air then it landed and hit another drift and went straight in the air but was tilted left. It wasn't a big deal but it caught me by surprise and scared the $hit out of me. I almost fell off but i stayed on. It was fun hitting the drift the 2nd and 3rd time :D
BearCat2003 02-18-2003, 03:49 PM Hope he's all right , but I hope he learns a lesson!
You should not be doing that kind of speed if you don't know what's ahead of you!
Would you dive headfirst into murky water?I think not!
Although I feel for your buddy , I feel there is no need for this sort of accident.

Tell us how you really feel.
Thumbdoctor 02-18-2003, 05:01 PM :cussing: Another great hazard here in the Montreal area is the amount of ice piles(frozen slush) left in the middle of the lake from our fishermen pals clearing ice hole and stacking up the slush. What a great gag once the snow drifts around them ! I took out one side of my machine hitting one of those babies.

He actually, went accross the ice about 30 minutes before in the other direction. He abviously didn't stay on his same tracks when he was returning!
Everyone learns from there mistakes ???

I can't stand those damn things, I hit one of those dead center, right accross the suspension... My Freaking back hurt for weeks after that :nervous:
oldyeller 02-19-2003, 01:26 PM Yeah I always try to check out the lake before I open her up for a long stretch. My biggest fear besides snowdrifts are the dreaded pressure cracks, like running into a brick wall. Then theirs always the brain dead ice fisherman who plows a road across the lake so he can drive his car out to the hut :cussing:
paidncash 02-19-2003, 04:03 PM WOW that sled really came apart, it looks alot worse than my REV after i smashed it into a 7ft ditch embankment at 40mph. How is your buddy did he break anything? I hope he gets better real fast :D

Yah, she just shattered like dropping a beer bottle on the garage floor.
But, that night was about -40° and there was no snow on the ice(except for the drift ???
LadyK 02-20-2003, 08:50 AM Hope your friend recovers quickly :)
