: Warm Riding?
rokke17 03-11-2003, 08:41 PM Its supposed to be like 40 or 45 here this weekend. I really want to get out on my sled though.
i have a 95 XCR 600 with pipes, clutched and heads.
Do I need to worry about blowing up my engine or anything? I worry about that with it being so warm, I generally think its a bad idea to ride when its that warm.
Thanks
Bauer 03-11-2003, 08:43 PM My XLT would be PARKED!!!! Not worth the worry of the engine going boom!
michahicks 03-11-2003, 08:45 PM With the warmer temps, don't worry about burning down as long as you are running on snow. What will probably happen is just the opposite. Blubbery rich is much more likely. You might want to make sure you are carrying a fresh set of plugs...

Exactly how I feel, but some people think its ok to ride when its that warm.
SD_Sledhead 03-11-2003, 08:48 PM I wouldn't worry about those temps as long as your getting into alot of snow for your heat exchangers. The sled will run rich, but it shouldn't blow
FZRIDA 03-11-2003, 08:52 PM I love riding when its warm the feeling of rippin around in just a t shirt rules but I heard as long as you get enough snow to the exchangers and your sleds not a fan you should be all set+
SXman 03-11-2003, 08:53 PM Fan cooled sleds are the ones to worrie...they need cold air for good cooling. Liquid cooled sleds however are of a different breed. Snow, slush, water,...its what cools the heat exchangers on your sled to cool the coolant! These ar'nt fan cooled engines! My 97' SX 700 Yamie has had everything possibly done to the engine, its piped, clutched, ported, polished, carbs bored, you name it...its got it.
I've ridden when its 45 deg. out...not real hard, but none the less I was out clipping the trails. At worst, my jetting was a tad rich becuase of the temps, but everything was fine. Light clothes and no gloves are a real treat to snowmobiling!
Sled Dogg 03-11-2003, 09:48 PM I was out in the warm weather riding today. what a blast! Can't blow from being to rich.
jwheeler 03-11-2003, 09:54 PM will not blow just run richer from the warm temps, will most likely feel sluggish the warmer it get but not dangerous for a liquid sled, personally i love cold frosty nights to really get her screamin. :hallo1: do i worry about meltdown??? :p
AzCats 03-11-2003, 11:41 PM I rode in 58 degree temps. yesterday. The sled ran very cool but quite rich in fuel mixture.
It was a blast anyway. Have Fun !

zr580cat 03-12-2003, 08:23 AM Rokke,
I feel the same way you do. We're heading to Hurley/Ironwood on Friday, but the forecast is calling for 50F+.
I've been told by many sledders & mechanics not to go. They say that even though it's liquid cooled, it can overheat.
I wouldn't mind going if it was going to be easy riding, but the guys I'm going with are talking about 250 miles each day.
It kinda scares me. I'm riding a '96 ZR580 and I've already had to rebuild once this year.
i always ride in those temps. i just jet down a few sized so i wont be running so rich all day and loading up. i have never had any problems.
ZR Rider 03-12-2003, 09:27 AM As long as you guys are riding in snow... and not glare ice, you will be fine! Well... unless your heat exchangers are under the boards (Vipers).
You will loss bottom end on non EFI sleds but it will just run rich! Make sure your leading... could be a vapour trail behind you!! lol
We always go out for a rip when it gets warm, sled uses more gas, but what a hoot to ride with out so much gear on! Thermo undies, overkill socks... leather golves... no way! Light riding jacket... machanics golfs... giver!
Darryn Duncan 03-12-2003, 12:34 PM By running rich you shouldn't blow anything up, might go thru plugs but its worth riding isn't it? T-shirt rides we call em, when its that warm. My 95 zrt800 gets sluggish but still goes at those temps.
Golsovia 03-12-2003, 01:22 PM Fans and liquids both run rich when it's warm. A slippery surface (snow, ice) is good most of the time for both as well so the engine doesn't have to work so hard. A liquid cools great when there's water or powder either one, it can be a bit fussier when it's a bit cooler than what you expect and the snow doesn't get lifted as well. I wouldn't hesitate going with either a fan or a liquid. I personally would trust a fan a bit more in your situation since I have a lot more experience with them.
97cougar 03-12-2003, 02:03 PM I AGREE WITH GOLSOVIA I HAVE BEEN SPRING RIDING IN MAINE AND WATCHED LIQUIDS OVER HEAT WHILE THE FANS ARE FINE.JUST DO NOT LET THEM IDLE,AS SOON AS YOU COME TO A STOP AND THE IDLE DROPS DOWN SHUT THEM OFF YOU WILL BE ALL SET WITH BOTH.UNLESS IT REACHES 70'S THEN WE WILL TAKE THE SLEDS TO THE OCEAN TO COOL THEM OFF IN THE 48 DEGREE MAINE OCEAN WATERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ITS KINDA LIKE JET SKIING WITH A 2 INCH PADDLE UNDERNEATH YOU! :p :D  SWRules SWRules
Its supposed to be like 40 or 45 here this weekend I have the opposite problem working in northern Quebec. Just got back from a month in the bush for 5 days of vacation, when I left yesterday morning it was -43 C, about -50F on thermometer, -75 with windchill. Temps went down to -54 C (-65 F) two weeks ago on thermometer. Lets just say we had problems starting the sleds (VK 540 and Bravo).
polcat500 03-12-2003, 05:49 PM Hey Rokke17 were do u ride at? I ride on the trails in Victora, thats were I live. Sucks that were getting warm weather, oh well its spring. Last weekend was nice though! :p
rokke17 03-12-2003, 08:22 PM I live right by Lake Minnetonka, so when my sleds at home I am out there alot. I also rip the Luce Line quite a bit, out to Watertown etc.
I go to school in Hougton, so I am up here all winter with the exception of Xmas break. I keep my sled up here because the last couple winter breaks there hasnt been anything snow wise in MN. I have a cabin near Ely, and I used to do all my riding up there and near home, but now I just keep my sled up here, and only take it home summers for maintenace.
Its supposed to be like 40 here this weekend, so I think this may be one of the last rides of the year, but there is still snow if you know where to find it :)
