Whats wrong with the advise? He (the sales clerk) has probably seen them in backwards and tried to save him money.
My friend bought a older 500 polaris that was rebuilt by previous owner.
the arrow was pointing to the intake and it ended up that the ring split pointing at the intake side caught on the intake port scoring the cylinder and burned down the piston

I once had a piston with the arrow marked on backwards. I put the piston on the rod and when I was installing the cylinder I noticed the ring ends weren't on the intake side like they should have been. I had to take the piston off again and turn it. Rings would have broke otherwise.

i dislike to admit it but the best parts guys i have seen are women. the tractor dealership in the town south of us has a woman in parts. she is great, with all the latest facts on what plowshear is wearing best in the changing moisture conditions each spring to what spray nozzle is best for spraying tobacco from year to year. the sled dealership i like to deal with has a mother and daughter team in parts, they have only made one mistake with me that i can remember on a $.02 item. along with both being beautiful they are great and ask a shop technician if they don't know.

Yea I've run into some expensively bad info from dealers in the past , but at least now-a-days with a little web research and a good shop manual , these experiences (at least for me) are almost nonexistant today. It sure helps to have the referance material handy even if you think you know what your doing. :)
