I am looking at getting the 550 Pro X, or Also the reg 550 with the premium shocks.(then add the plastic ski's) I would like too get the 500, but they are not offering the wider running boards. (still pondering)

I am not a lake runner (high speed) the trails around me are tight  twisty trails. Also my budget is small.

I am wondering if anybody has a 550 fan and has done any clutching and gear work? Do you get a better take off? Also how is the mid range :0: punch (like around 45-50)

I like Polaris and would like to stay with them. My friend has the z 570 fan from cat and he has geared and clutched it and gets 92-96 out of it. also has awesome take off.

Any help would be great.

Choices. Choices

Thanks

The 550 is a blast the way it was , i can imagine that the 04 is alot better. We use Goodwin Performance clutching cost more but really works. We also go down 1 tooth on top and 3 teeth on bottom. The woods are alot of fun know . We dont stud are sleds but should because it would really hook up with studs. Just keep in mind it is a fan and have fun, alot of fun !

I would lowwer my upper sprocket by 1 tooth this will make it more snappy out of the hole and out of turns gice EPI a look for clutch kits they have 1 listed for your machine..

Bought my wife a 2003 550 fan Classic here in Ontario. Price was right, $5900 canadian plus taxes with electric start and electric reverse. (brand new)
Read all the magazine reviews and were positive about the 550, but I have to tell you I am less than impressed. Off the line throttle response is sluggish, mid-range is okay but it absolutely lays down and dies at 75mph!!!! My old 1989 Phazer fan was alot quicker than this is!!!!
Tell me NHsledding, how in the world does your buddy get over 90mph with an AC 570 fan?
The electric reverse is a poor copy of the Ski-doo system (only my opinion, don't get mad). My 2002 Legend performs perfectly in reverse, but the Classic lacks power and sounds sour. Anyone else have problems with reverse?? If the sled is not 'Fully' warmed up it will stall, unlike the Legend. I can drive around it by burping the throttle at the right time, but my wife can't, and is getting frustrated. Dealers says there is nothing wrong.

My 550's were way off on the jetting ,ride it awhile (250 miles ) , check plugs, at this point I would usually go down 2 sizes on jets. yours may be different , hope it helps

Thanks for the tip skidont. I'll be looking ay the jetting situation in the fall. Sled handles and rides excellent so I hope to get the bugs worked out.
