Hey I have a question. Is an MXZ 583 good for my first sled? I am 15, and there is a '98 MXZ 583 at a local dealership for 2695$. Good idea/Good price? Thanks.

I think everyone should start out on a 500cc or smaller machine, regardless of age.Just my opinion.

That is a awesome machine. The 583 is a awesome engine by ski-doo. It aint much faster then a 500. That is a good deal i would get it.

My 15 year old son (he's small, at 5'2" and 120 lb) has an '00 MXZ 500 which I got him 3 years ago when he was 12. It's a great sled. The 583 should be a good sled as well for a first time sled. I may be wrong about this, but since the '98 MXZ's are in the older S2000 chassis, $2695 seems a little steep. I think that the '99 MXZ 600 in the ZX chassis would be a better choice and I'll bet you could get it for the same money if you shopped around.

As a side note: my son will be 16 this summer and next year, he'll be riding my 7c Blair since I'll get rid of his 500 and get a new 800X HO for myself. The only times he rides is with me. Ain't I a great dad?

I would recommend that engine for a first sled for sure. The price is a little high unless it has very few miles and is in mint condition. I would pay no more than $2000 if it was in awesome shape. But that engine won't let you down.

the sled is bulletproof, but too big a sled for first sled. especially if you are going to be without parental guidance. that sled will run along with the biggest sleds and top 100 miles per hour. never get anything that is beyond your capability because you will soon not like it, whether it be a sled, horse, motorcycle or anything else.

i know ROTON's son has an mxz 500 but it looks like the boy rides with his father that is showing him the ropes.

i forgot to say my first sled since i was a kid is an mxz 500 and it is everything that i need. i have been the lead man many times and had to wait for the big power boys to catch up, those same guys on 6, 7 and 800's won't even try to keep up with my son on his mxz 440f.

I disagree with you guys who think it is too big, unless you are recommending he ride a 380.

My 583 (excellent engine, IMHO) was my first (and still only) sled. I remember running across the lake with my partner's son (13yo at the time) on his 500 and we were neck and neck for a long way before I finally pulled ahead. If he's ready for a 500, he's ready for a 583. There's really not much difference.

I get more of a thrill from the short bursts of acceleration than from top speed, something to think about.

The main thing is to use common sense, and no, you DON'T have to hold the throttle wide open! :D Don't let your buddies push you into riding harder than you feel comfortable; don't forget, it sounds like they have quite a bit more experience than you. They'll wait for you at the next intersection!

right on jacqui  especially dangerous at those road crossings where 5 kids line up at the side of the road. one taps the throttle and jumps ahead 6 inches then they all hit the throttle only to find out the first kid stopped because there is a car coming.

Here is a pic of my pair of 98's. My girlfriends 500 and my 583. I gave $5000 for the pair and the 500 had 1300 miles and the 583 had 1800. I think that while the age has something to do with the size sled someone should start with but there are other factors too. I had an 89 phazer for my first sled but started riding on an 70 335 ski doo. I think as long as you use your head you will be fine. My friend had to buy a 600 xc sp for his first sled and he should be riding a 440 but he had to have a bigger sled. As for the speed i have had mine at 105 on the speedo and it is fast but i dont know very many people who haven't opend up their sled just to see how fast it will go. Now to put an end to my rambling if you do get it i think you will be very happy with your purchase and good luck with it. Just remember to use your head

I say too big for 1st sled

BUT it also depends on your sledding experience

I guess most here have not been sledding that long ;) ,hell when I was 15 I had a year old 87 Saffari 377 and so did a couple of friends and we all had fun,I think the biggest sled among us friends was a 88 MX 462,with quite a few older elans :hallo1:

I say for a 1st sled stick with a 440 fan - Indy 500 LC,then jump to a bigger sled the next year once you got used to your abilities and the sleds power

Don't listen to them :) Personnally last year was my first year for snowmobiling I got a Jag 440 Fan for the first year I found a lack of power with it. This year I bought a 97 Formula 500 Liquid Cooled. So I say why not just save some money just go big first year. I'd just suggest you get a feel for the sled before you try to hit jumps or something like that.

I've had 2 583's and have never been able to go over 100mph. I also dont think there is much difference between a 500 and a 583. I will say that the 583 is about a good a motor as you can get. I've punished the hell out of mine and had not 1 problem. That price is too high. Dont pay more than $2000.00. You can find them all over for that price.

Great sled, even better motor. I ran mine to over 12,000 miles without a problem. There is enough speed to scare ya, but as the other have been suggesting, if you don't ride past your ability you'll be fine.

The price ..... too high.
