i ahve been looking at getting a better pickup to pull my snowmobile trailer(enclosed) boat ect around with. I have a 02 sub with the 5300 ande a 97 with a 5.7 . the father inlaw has an 00 power stroke, that is a great pickup, lots of power, and we have a 6.5 turbo at the farm, which is kind of a dog. As you can see i am a chevy person at heart ,but i do like the power stroke, can anyone that has a new chevy with the 6.6 or some one with a new power stroke let me know how you like these pickups, how they pull, mpg, power, as in 1,2,3 or anything else i need to know, as you may have noticed i did not include dodge, my father has a dodge and i am not impressed with it at all.

I forgot to mention, i mean as in power thinking of pulling an enclosed snowmobile trailer to montana, up and down the hills with a 30 mph wind coming straight at ya, do you have to kick it down or can you stay in over drive, and how good is the mpg then thanks.

In my opinion i would go with the powerstroke. There are powerstokes all over in everything. The powerstroke is the same as the T444E in international trucks and busses. Last i heard there were well over a million engines produced. I have never been a big Izuzu fan and Izuzu and GM developed the 6.6 together. Their trucks are all over and dirt cheap. I am also not real sure about parts availabilty yet.

I have a buddy that has a chevy with the duramax with the alison transmission and that is a perfact combo. The truck is no only quick but it will pull the s$%t out of any snowmobile trailer. Stay with the best and go with chevy. :D :D :D

My cousin has a dm 6.6 w/the manual 6sp. This is a crew cab long box it gets 22mpg on the eway w/o a load on it. As for ford their new 6.0 is too new to tell yet but their 7.3 was a beast. To bad you can't get a cummins in a chevy.... :(

not impressed with the cummins ??? ?I have been to many truck pulls and dyno runs, the most powerful trucks on the dyno time and time again are cummins powered.my cummins out pulls my uncles ford very easy.but either way your helping our state as both the cummins, and navistar plants are here in Indiana.hmmm that makes me think maybe we hoosiers know how to build the most powerful engines on the market :D .not to mention the best trannys :0: .

Yeah seriously.

Ford and Chevy both make good trucks. But there diesels are not half the engine the Cummins is.

Look at the new Dodge with the Cummins turbo. That is an engine. Its as close to a transport truck as you can get. And if you never drove in a new dodge you will be suprized.

I dont want you to just think (OH HES JUST A DODGE MAN, speaking his buying opinion.)

Here are some facts you should review.

1. Cummins turbo has the widest torque band of any diesel pickup. Starts 400RPM before Duramax.
2. It has 30-40% fewer moving parts then GMs and Ford's diesels.
3. 15000miles between Oil Changes.

HERES A BIG ONE.
4. It has a self priming fuel filter. This means you can easily restart the engine after routine fuel filter changes (or if you run out of fuel). If you run out of fuel in a GM or FORD you have to go to the dealer and have them purge the fuel system. THe dodge does it automaticly and your on your way.

Also the cummins really hold its resale value. Early 90s with the cummins are still expensive. These engine dont fail and dont die.

Go take one for a test drive. You wont regret it.

I must agree with Machzzzz1. My neighbor has a 2000 Dodge 3500 Cummins Turbo diesel and i've never seen a truck with so much power and grunt.

It has good gas mikeage, he drives it 1 hour to work everyday when he could take his '96 or newer Chevy Blazer ??? So its obviously better on gas than that is. On the road i live on there are Huge Hills that go up and down and this thing just demolishes them all.

The truck has amazing torque. i hear him start it up every morning and when he leaves his driveway, you just hear a LOUD, i dont know, sounds like a BIG RIG when he leaves, and he usually has it almost to the floor and it dosnt accelarate very vast so its a TRUE DIESEL.

I'm with the others. Why no Cummins? It's a medium duty engine dropped into a pickup truck. Ford and Chevy couldn't hold a candle to the Cummins equipped Dodge if they were giving them away for free! I have over 96K on mine and it runs like a top.

I heard one of the new Common rail injection Cummins and it sounds awesome!! Still like a diesel, just alot quieter. You cannot argue with 305 hp and 555 lb/ft specs with the 6 speed either. My sole reason for not upgrading is that mine has a feature that is too hard to give up - its paid for.

Seriously, go look at a new 03 2500 or 3500 Dodge with the Cummins. You will be impressed.

Ultimate tow rig with BOMBING potential IMHO would be a 1997 or 1998 DODGE ram turbo diesel. Ahhh the days before computer controlled engines.. Sorry guys with the new dodges but I just dont trust the computers yet. The second generation 12V dodges also have the P7100 fuel injection pump which is beyond reliable. The VP44's which are are found in the ISB's do have a nasty reputation for high failure rates. AS they are only lubricated by fuel instead of engine oil like the P7100. Basically if the line pressure drops below 8PSI. Problems can happen quickly as there is no lube. The 12 V trucks are also alot cheaper to BOMB for a few hundred bucks you can easily outpower all the new diesels with reliabilty.

I have always liked GM trucks. However, I don't know much about the new duramax diesel and how long they last. If I were buying a diesel, I would go with a cummins. I work at a Chrysler dealership and never had any problems with the diesels. A cummins diesel will always outlast the truck.

KNow a guy with a 7.3 and he can't get more than 15mpg on his 03 f250 4x4 ext cab, auto, short box and it has 8k miles. I have spoke with two Ford service dept managers and both of them said that they've had every single new 6ltr powerstroke motor come back needing new injectors that they dropped and other parts. Each said to wait till next year's model before buying there new 6ltr. Note that one of them owns a new cummins LOL.

The Chevy/GMC trucks have IFS on htere 1/2 ton Heavy Duty through 1 Ton trucks. Ford uses a weaker Dana 50 or 55 on there F250. I think it's a 60 on there F350 dually

Ford and Chrysler 4wd HD (3/4T and 1T) trucks use Dana60 front and Dana60HD Full Flaoting rear axles in the rear. GM uses the same thing in their 1/2 ton all the way to the 1.5Tchassis cab, just with stiffer torsion bars to add weight capacity.

Not trying to start a pi$$ing match, but dana 80's were available on 1-ton dodges in the rear with a 70 up front.

NEw 3/4 and 1 ton fronts diff are not the same as 1/2 tons. HD use bigger ring gears larger axle and CV shaft diameters.
