It's a great machine!, I have a '98. Only two problems
1) The wiring and relays are exposed and venerable behind the left rear wheel. Its a good idea to install a mud flap there.
2) The Yamaha service manual available for this machine sucks big time!. It's a poor quality reprint with barely legible wiring schematics.
The clutches (flyweights) are noisy on these models, sometimes sounds like the motor is Knocking. The black ground wire comming about 2 inches out of the CDI box seems to break inside the insulation causing the ignition & kill switch not to work. The choke / warm up Idle speed is unstable but once warm everythings fine. Change engine oil/filter often!!
My dad has a 2001 i think.
It is a great bike. Has alot of power and great suspension.

I can set you up with a 99 griz I was going to buy. It has a high lifter big bore thats fresh, and the whole top end. Only 400 miles on the whole quad, 27" tires over 50% tread left, tons of camo gstuff and a bow rack, spotlight etc. Performance exhaust and jet kit, and stock tires also I think. It's in southern ohio. He wanted 4200 on Ebay but will deal I'm sure. He wants to buy a wrecked Honda RC51 from a reletive.

Forgot to mention that it has the head done also to match the big bore kit. Oh it's High lifters big bore piston and rings but he had the cylinder sleeved instead of nical-sil FYI. And he used alll genuine yam parts in the valve train.

I have a 2000, 600 Grizz and love it. Very nice machine. Although I would agree with Thumbdoctor's comments.
I wouldn't hesitate to pick up a 98, a buddy has one, and its been a very reliable machine for him.
