In my humble opinion, the Indy 500 of the 90's was a bullet proof classic.

This sled, along with the XLT and earlier versions of the triple (600 and 650) put polaris on the map and made them what they are today.

i dont think polaris had a very good track record on the XLT motors... IMO

i think arctic cat has this class pinned with their f5. i think the new 500 revs will be up to par with it's chassis and suspension but not the power output of the motor.

IMO from the 1990's was Ski-doo's 583. Never quits!

without a doubt f5, theres no 500 as of right now stock that can compete with it

If the question is for the "right now" it would be the F5, the few years before now Polaris.

if we r talking a few years back then the indy 500 or the 530 ext, they both seem to have been bullet proff engines in my area.
as far as today goes, i here the f5 is really fast but i cant comment on the 5oo line now because i dont ride or ride with anyone who has the 500 cc sleds, its all 600 and up.

Dawg, good point. When I started riding, 500's were pretty much top shelf stuff. Now kids are learning how to ride on them...

To answer the question, prior to the F5, it has to be the Indy 500, or one of it's derivatives.

03 XC SP 500 --103.9hp

03 F5 -93hp dynoed AMS and 98hp dynoed by D&D in Snowtech

The F5 never reached its hyped hp,all dyno #s have been below 100hp on Production sleds

:withstupid: :withstupid: Thats always been one of my favorite sleds. I love my 500 I have now. I haven't been around an F5, but so far there aren't many other 500's that have been able to touch it. Its a great all around sled with a ton of power for a 500. In short distances it will suprise alot of bigger sleds.

Around here the xc 500 cleaned house, the f-5's couldnt touch them at the drags or anywhere else for that matter.

instantly most say the fastest, what about all day long riding. my son and i are told by many that we are mega riders. we leave in the dark and come in way after dark. we both use ski-doo mxz 500 and a 440.

I would have to say the old standard Indy 500 is imo the best. It was simple, had decent power and was fairly cheap. The xc 500's certainly raised the bar somewhat when they were introduced and again with the exaust valves. The F5 is nice but after one year it really has not proven it self imo. For the 500's I'm looking at over all package. Ride, how it handles, feel of the motor, etc. The F5 certainly meets these but I'm not sure about its longevity. The old 500 fuji twin was pretty much bullit proof so long as you realized it was just a 500 twin. Good topic.

I'd have to agree with rob and you others that said the Indy 500 def. has proven itself as a bulletproof engine and good trail sled for many a years. The f5 is fast but so far not nearly as reliable. They may prove themselves. And as for my 550 which is in the 500 cc range peice of $hit don't ever buy one!!!!! :p :p :D ;) ??? My friend has a 95 Indy 500 with over 5000 miles and still runs very well and was never properly cared for. He lets it sit outside uncovered at least 8 months of the year. I got it to hit 100 mph this past winter. I thing the only thing he ever spent money on was gas, oil, and plugs.

The Polaris speedo is off 10 mph in 95. But still that was a good run even at 90 mph. ;)
