I was reading an other post and it reminded me to ask the question, is there anything that can be done for the weak strator that is on the MXZ 700. The lights and hand warmers work well but when I come to a stop or the engine is at idle the lights are very dime. I was told that this is common to the 2000 700. I was wondering if any one has a fix or upgrade that I can do this summer. Like the earlier post said it is better to fix it now.

Thanks

There is nothing wrong with your stator. Those stators were 280 watts but not until 6500 rpm. This means that up until that rpm the output will be lower. This happens on all sleds but different styles of heating elements are used and require different amounts of energy (watts) to heat. Ski-doo's are pretty poor and require alot of power from the stator but the output of the stator is very low at idle. The only fix is to make the sled idle at 4000 rpm. ;)

Just kidding, don't try that. Yours is fine.

I dont find that on my 94 safari deluxe? Even with hand warmers on there is very little difference between idle speed watts and higher rps watss. JMO

Good question!
My son's 99 MXZ is exactly as you described, and yet my 02 Legend is bright and strong at idle. Same 600cc engines. Did Ski-Doo upgrade the charging system in the 02?

The twin headlights sap the juice, I pulled the lowbeam wire off one of them and run with just one light. If I want more light switching to highbeam will give me both again.

I doubt the old safari has anywhere near the headlight draw the new sleds have?

does the safari have a battery since its deluxe I wondered.same as the legend,if your running battery the watts you need would not drop because it would pull the power from the battery until it is wound up.also I doubt the safari has the draw of the newer headlights.

The legend should have electric start. The battery helps the system along. Also the 02 legends I believe had a much stronger stator, I believe 380 watts Not sure but, I know they upgraded to a bigger output than the standard MXZ has. My 02 800 MXZ will dim the lights bad at an idle. If you have the hand warmers on high and the brights on at an idle, the lights are VERY dim. I don't know how it stays running :D LOL

Thanks for the input and the detail from GLH. As for the 02 i believe that they did upgrade the strator. At least I can cross this of my summer to do list.

The '00 MXZ 700 has a 280 watt stator
The '99 MXZ (X)440 & 600 have a 290 watt stator
The '98 - '02 Grand Touring has the most output @ 360 watts. My '99 MXZ 670 HO has a very weak 220 watt system. I replaced the Heated grips to a more efficient Hot Grips low resistance model. This helped keep the grips warm at low RPMs and the headlight was a little brighter at idle speed.

I found that a simple solution to the dim gauges or the bouncing tach is to turn up the Idle speed a bit.

Man im really out of it becasue I cant remember what i set it at but I think i keep it around 1700Rpm.

Never occurred to me that the battery was helping out at idle. Thanks.
