I just bought a 02 MXZ 600R Sport with 350 miles. I got an awesome deal. I'm a new rider (first Sled) and my wife also thinks I crazy talking about snowmobiles in June. My question is:

1. This sled is in perfect condition but it has seen some salt and the engine block is covered. Is there anything I can do to neutralize the salt and clean up the engine without disassembly.

2. I have a Garmin Streetpilot 3 GPS that I want to mount (Somehow?) Anyone done this? Not sure where and how to mount it.

3. I have about an 800 mile trip in Feb to Ontario. This sled is set up for a woman about 125 Lbs. I should be 250 with gear, Should I have my local dealer set this up for me? Is there anything I should be aware of since it has so few miles?

See sled below, This sled was ordered as a snowcheck sled in 02 and never picked up. Previous owner begged the dealer to replace the ordered red hood with black (So Im told). Looks sorta like an MXZX but let me know what you think?

heads up sled for sure. that white that you are seeing could be just natural from the aluminum, but you can polish it with autosolvel. as for setting the sled up for a heavier rider just start at the back blocks cranking them up so that you only bottom out once or twice per ride. as for the gps there is a post where a fellow did a great job mounting his. it is on the first couple pages of the general snowmobiling.

welcome aboard and put in your location.

Great looking sled, but then I'm partial to the two-tone anyway.

First make sure that your suspension is coupled. Make sure the fat part of the block is toward the back.

I would start out with the front shocks set at 2 (one up from the softest setting) Set the front/rear shock at 3. Set the top of the rear shock in the softest setting. Set the rear torsion springs so that when you set on it, it settles about 3 - 4 inches. You don't want to set at the top of the travel. You need the up travel just as bad as you need the down travel. Take it a little easy the first time out, especially since you are new. If you bottom more than once, then you need to stiffen the front rear shock and /or the torsion. I guess I would go with the torsion first unless your skis feel heavy and hard to turn. Then I would stiffen just the front/rear shock first. The more aggressive you begin to ride, the stiffer you will want the suspension. You may even decide you like it uncoupled. That's my preference. It floats more and the front is lighter.

If I confused you, that's normal. Let me know where you need things cleared up and I'll try to help.

As far as the corrosion, I would spray it down with WD-40 or something similar, then just wipe it down. Use a fine 3-M pad for the real bad stuff.

Thanks for the great info. Ill pull it out and play with the suspension tonight. It has HPG shocks on it and the springs have red and green lines at the top. What are these for? I looked in the owners manual and it is pretty useless except to tell you that an adjustment exists and to contact your ski-doo dealer.

Look on the clutch cover there is a diagram with suspension settings relative to rider weights.

TB2 is right. There should be a sticker on the front part of your belt guard that explains the general set-up.

All, Thanks for the great info. I think I have set it up. I set the spring to 4, the front/rear shock to 4 and left the suspension coupled. When I sit on it the coupling block is more or less centered between the stops. I was not aware that the adjustments were so simple. RTFM I guess!

Now if I could just get the right front shock adjuster to turn. I sprayed WD-40 on it and it still doesnt move. The left is set for 2 and the right is set for 1. Not sure why.

As for cleaning up the aluminum, I found a small tub of Mothers Aluminum Wheel cleaner in my garage (forgot I had it). Everything aluminum has a mirror finish now. Probably looks better then new.

for changing the spring adjustment on the front suspend the front leaving no weight on it. might be easier that way.

Paul,

That did it! I used the floor jack under the frame to take the weight off and it turned. Looks like Im all set and ready to run. Just need some snow. :D

Thanks

Matt

mb,
you'll notice as time goes on that i am blessed not only with great looks but brains too. LOL :D

i forgot to say when you use a floor jack to use a board about 24 inches across in between the jack and the pan. also suspend the sled in the off season, i put an empty 7 kg chlorine superpuck pail under the pan to keep the skis up. for the back i just suspend the sled with a tie down from the barn ceiling.

I just hung the whole thing from the rafters last night. Now it's got all the weight off everything. A lot more room, too. :D

Welcome mb86196. Sounds like you may have been around sledding at some time. If you are totally new to the sport or it's been many years since youv'e rode, I have a few tips to pass along so first trip hopefully won't be your last, from a bad expierence. Riding tips, things to carry with you, etc. and you will get much more from these sites. Great way to get started. Reply if necessary.

Apc, I would be interested in hearing what to take and your horror stories. Im riding with two others but I have never been on a long haul tour. We are starting in Iron Bridge, ON and stopping in Wawa, and Chapleau and then somewhere between Chapleau and Iron Bridge, Duberville Maybe?

I plan on packing lite but would be interested in hearing what you suggest I should not live without.

Mail me with your reply.

Matt
