: '99 Zr 700
Snow-Drift 07-07-2003, 08:18 PM So I'm looking at getting a '99 ZR700 for $2100. It has 2400 miles on it and a 1.5" x 121" paddle track, starts right up with no choke..... of course it is warm out. Never been wrecked and has a new clutch, and all servicing was done at the dealership. The owner says he just needs the cash as he is selling off other toys as well. Is there anything I should pay particular attention to, what are your guys thoughts regarding what info. I have mentioned?

3eyedcat 07-07-2003, 10:23 PM From what I understand they came from the factory setup pretty soft [clutching, jetting] but once setup they ran ok. Don't know how it will work with the 1.5 paddle on it, but it could be a real hand full without some real carbide up front, plus if you plan on playing around on the lakes that track will hurt you big time up top, but should be real good off trail though. GOOD-LUCK....
phazerhater 07-07-2003, 10:27 PM I have heard the same thing, that they were real dogs stock and needed some tinkering to run as they should. There is plenty in the aftermarket for them though to wake it up. As mentioned, clutching and jetting was very poor stock as well as suspension and gearing setup if I remember correctly. They do have the potential to run strong though with a good setup. I'm sure someone on here still has one and has a setup for you to try.
Good luck with it.
Snow-Drift 07-07-2003, 10:58 PM It will primarily be on/off trail, more off trail......like my '96XCR. It's also safe to say that there will be no lake runs with it as that is not my liking. I just got back from looking at it and the thing is like brand new. Runs great, has never run into or over anything, (from what I can see). Compression is good, and runs and sounds good. I figure $2100 is a good price so I'm going to be getting it tomorrow. Also has new slides (hi-fax), 2 new belts, new edge rail grips, new hood screens and the cover. It seems to be a fair deal to me. Ooooooohhhh, I'm going Caaaatttt

Downriver Thunder 07-08-2003, 05:15 AM Watch out for the stators. Couple buddies and their 99 700's chewed em up.
ZR Rider 07-08-2003, 06:39 AM My buddy has one... it's a rocket... but it takes a touch of tinkering to get it to run really good! Also, his is a bit hard on oil even with adjusting??? But oil is cheaper then pistons... so ride on!
ZRJoe 07-09-2003, 11:12 AM I have a 99 ZR700. The clutching should be done. You can really wake these sled up if you want. I have clutched, piped, geared, power breather and a high comp head on mine and it flys.
Bad thing though. It really likes the go go juice.
At that mileage you should check the clutches in anycase. Also watch the jetting on the carbs. It really makes a difference.
They are definately fun. And can scare some unsuspecting 800's if set up right.
The track will be a bit much. You will probably have to gear down a bit.
Snow-Drift 07-09-2003, 12:29 PM Apparently this sled has been geared and jetted appropriately. I was looking at it last night when I got it home, and the dealership where the guy I brought it from has a piece of paper taped to the clutch cover with the spring size, cam arm weight, and main jet setting as well as the e-clip setting. This guy primarily did 90% of his riding off trail in the powder with bigger machines. He had a 144" long track sitting next to it on the trailer, so I'm guessing they were riding in quite similar terrain, perhaps not. The good thing is, I ride at all the same areas he does, so I would assume it is set up right. All this guy kept telling me is "it pulls hard!" I guess I'll find out when I go riding this winter, but I know one thing, when I loaded it on my trailer, HOLY COW!! That thing has grunt! Nothing like anything else I have ridden or loaded. I know it is a bigger machine with more power, but, wow!
Hey ZRJoe, if you care to share your setup with me I am interested. I'm not in a big hurry, but whenever you have time just post it or send me an email. I'm primarily running in the area of 5000-8500 ft elevation. By the way, what is a stock cam arm weight anyway?

3eyedcat 07-09-2003, 09:25 PM Congrats sno drift, have fun with Freddy this coming winter.
Greenclicker 07-10-2003, 04:37 AM Good luck sno-drift, nothing is more fun than the coming winter with your new sled!
Do you know which drivechain you got? if it's a 22 then you should go and buy yourself a 26 right on! It would snap off right away!
But it sounds like the the other guy was a serious guy, so he has probealy changed it?
ZRJoe 07-10-2003, 10:27 AM Hey Sno..
I run at 1900 ft. so my setup will be a LOT different than yours.
I'm running 330 main jets, eclip 2nd from top.
The power breathers are left open until -20c
My clutch setup uses 60 gram polaris weights.
The spring is a Pink EPI which if I recall is 165 engage 305 full.
Mine engages at 4500 rpm and tops at 8300. (I need that for the twin pipes.)
The secondary uses a Black D&D and a 60-38 helix.
The gearing is I believe 23-41???
You should be running a 19/40 gearing setup with a 70 pitch chainand use a 9eh2-3 needle. But run a baseline first to see how it runs.
Check your piston wash and plugs. You should be fine!
