Well since I have a portion of my summer off, one of the projects I would like to do is build a tag along sled to carry miscellaneous things to my dad's cabin. I see some that are on the market, but I was wondering if anybody here has one or has used one and if you have, what would you like to change differently with yours? Would you make particular compartments so you could carry certain things or what? Would you increase or decrease the distance from your snowmobile to the sled? Would you change the width of the runners (skis)? I am just looking for any input as I would like to get this project started pretty soon and complete it before the end of the month. They seem pretty straight forward and basic, but I like to get input on some things before I start a project.

I also plan to built a sled trailer for this winter and I will take my old 86 pantera afs front suspension to do it. There a "U" shaped steel part that hold all the suspension together. I will simply start wleding on it to built the rest. I should end up with a full suspention one that will be smooth for the objects to carry. The important thing to chech is the dimension of it. So you can fit some 24 bottle case of beer side by side and your coleman cooler. The idea is not to have lost spaces when those item are carried. Must be modular with some standard items dimensions :) .

How far are you towing the sleigh? If you are towing for a good distance, say 1/2 mile or better then you might want to build a decent one. I on the other hand only tow at worst a 1/4 mile, but most of it is just up and down the hill at the cottage.

The sleigh consists of two downhill skis bolted to the bottom of a rooftop car storage container, and is very light. It will hold several 24's, trust me. It's just under 3x3 feet and trails the sled with a solid metal bar about 2 1/2 feet long, has no suspension. It has a tendency to try and pass you while you go down a hill slowly. It cost about $20 to make and hey the money I saved on the sleigh went towards more beer. :D

I made one leave it at the camp comes in handy when theres a big crowd. Used two skis off of a 69 skidoo welded a bar on top of the shackles built a wooden box on top of that .Then used an old ski shock off of a 82 skidoo for the tonge so it wood swivel and cusion when breaking.

I bought the tub at Scheels...used some steel skis that were laying around and welded up a frame and hitch.

now that would be a cool sled to tow someone across a pond in the summer with.
Does it weigh much?

Built mine out of an old galvanized bathtub, the kind Eaton and Simpsons used to sell in the fifties. It weighs about ten pounds, took some half-inch tubing, welded it to the legs and bent it up as a combination ski and hitch bar. Works great to get to the fishing hut, but not for rough duty use.

THE BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK IS TO BUY A NEW FOLD DOWN TRAILER SLED.THEY'RE ABOUT $200 USD.THAT WAY YOU CAN TUCK THEM ONTO YOUR TRAILER OR PUT THEM UPTOP ON THE ROOF RACK.THEY'LL HAUL AS MUCH EQUIPMENT OR AS MANY CASES OF BEER THAT YOUR SLED WILL PULL( BEFORE YOU BLOW A BELT ;) .YOU'LL NEED TO PROVIDE THE PLYWOOD-USE SALT TREATED LUMBER.PAINT OVER THE FACTORY PAINT (YES=WHEN NEW) AND IT'LL BE WITH YOU FOR A LONG TIME.I'VE USED THEM BEFORE (TO GET TO THE REMOTE =WAY OUT THERE CABINS) AND YOU WON'T REGRET IT.FOR $200 IT'S A NO BRAINER.TRY DENNIS KIRK CATALOGUE.

I bought a tobaggon at Canadian Tire made to pull behind sled. Cost about $200, no ski's just runs on the bottom.

Works great. Its has a hard piped hitch, so it doesn't catch up on hills. I was originally worried about the bottom taking a beating, but I've dragged it across alot of rough areas with no problems. Even pull it behind the quad if I'm going ice fishing with the Quad instead of the sled.

Just load her up and bungie everything down and have at it. I pull it a good 5 miles each way with no problems yet. Probably put 100 miles on it alone.

I just use an Otter Sled. Basic Plastic tub. I put teflon ware strips on the bottom with elevator bolts (old hyfax work great). I glued down closed cell foam to the bottom of the inside to soften the ride for the cargo. It has a square tube steel tow bar. I use it behind the sled and wheeler. Even use it to haul goose deks out in the fields in the fall. And as a bonus it fits nicely on top of my roof basket on my cherokee. Total cost about 170us. and its big enough to haul the 120Z for my nephew.
