the pump died on my 97 chevy, are there any tricks to the trade or is it like it looks. pump out fuel, pull down tank, fix replace. I was just wondering if anyone else has done this, i have the whole farm shop at my disposal so i am sure it will not be a problem, but the tricks off the trade are always good. thanks.

if its on 97 s10 blazer be careful when removing tank . there is a little vent line towards the front of the tank on top . its hard to see. watch the plastics on all the plastic lines . just went through this.

It is actually easier to pull off the bed . rather than pull down tank. Helped change one on a 96 it was easy, just make sure you have couple buds to help lift it off.

I am assuming you have a pickup. Be prepared to shell out some cash. You have to replace that as a whole unit. Its a big plastic fuel module, the pump is deep inside. Don't mess around trying to change just the pump. Buy the AC Delco unit. No tricks to changing her out. Pull the driveshaft, disconnect the fill hoses, unbolt tank, let it rest on a trans jack, slowly lower it,remove fuel pipes, unplug harness and she is out. Then swap out the fuel module. Good luck bro!

Never pulled a bed off to change any pump ever. I guess having a hoist has its perks. :D

Why would you pull the driveshaft out??
There is tons of room! Get the truck on blocks or stands, and get yourself a good floor jack. Take your time!
It is a pain to change, but do yourself a favor, get a good aftermarket or AC Delco, cause it's one of those things that you don't want to do twice!
I'm on my second replaced pump in 3 years!
What engine is in it?? You said it's a 97... 305 or 350?
There was 2 engines for 97 305's, the vortec and the standard 305. Make sure you check if the pump works for each motor! I never did reserch it, but I know it matters for other stuff. I found out the hard way changing the cap, wires and plugs. Standard 305, around $100.00 in parts, vortec... $350.00 in parts!

Good luck!

The vehicle is a 97 chevy 2500, 5.7 vortex i bought all the parts and pumped the fuel out of it this morning, i do not know when i shall take the tank out, this farming thing really bites into my time. This project does seem like A RAINY day project, The parts i got where the pump, the filter for the end of the pump, and a new fuel filter, the pickup just turned 100000 and i have changed the filter twice, i would think they would make these things a little tuffer.

Because it takes 5 minutes. Since the shaft is 3 inches away from the tank, pulling it is worth the time. You can cok(wouldnt take the real spelling) the the tank towards the middle of the truck(where the shaft is) to ease removal and installation, getting at the pipes etc. I have done dozens of these,on a hoist of coarse.I wouldn't do it any other way.

Went for a ride today with my Mom in her Dodge extended full size van. We stopped at the mall and could smell gas; it looks like she has a leaky gas tank. I'm thinking this will set her back a few bucks, might be time to sell it! :0:

Those pumps are particularly weak, if you hear one of those trucks with a noisy pump it usually isnt long, most of them get noisy before they quit!

Either way is about the same amount of work either removing the bed or just the tank, but you are alot less likely to wreck the lines by taking off the bed, but more likely to scratch the paint ;)

Changing fuel filters once a year is a good way to help the pumps live, blow through a new one, then try the one you are taking off after 50,000 miles and you will see how much harder the pump will have to work, this is key I have had vehicles with well in excess of 200000 miles without a fuel pump replacement, my wifes car is at 140k right now and it has never been touched (knock on wood).

Good luck.

On one of our cars the gas tank leaks, but only if you fill it over half. A gas tank to replace would cost us $400 :0:

i finally got it done and all back to gether ,what a pain in the ###, they should just put a pump on the farme of the pickup and this would be much better, just my 2crnts worth. The top was also interesting to take off the tank, i had to clkean all the gravel off, then take offf all the silicon. then i put it all back togehter and bingo it is running well. thanks for the ideas.
