Can anyone provide some URL's for some summertime reading, that describe the function of the helix and what effect changing the angles do?
I know this is a discussion forum, but typing isn't fun. Also, I know I need Aaen's Clutch Tuning book, just haven't purchased it yet.
I only have the basic grasp that the helix controls the up & down (or back) shifts, but I am looking to learn more in depth about the angles and their effects.
Some examples of my confusion is:
A 62/57 V's a 50/46, the characteristics would be ____?
(other than aggressive :D )
TIA, Gary

Catnip,
Hopefully you can make some sense of this. Your question was
Some examples of my confusion is:
A 62/57 V's a 50/46, the characteristics would be ____?
(other than aggressive )
Lets look at the numbers 62/57. What does it mean. The first number is the helix start angle. In this case it would be 62 degrees. Upon engagement your belt tries to move downwards in your secondary, the higher the number the easier that becomes (spring also comes into play). Once the belt moves downwards in the secondary the angle of the helix then changes to 57 degrees (also called finish angle) What application would this particular helix be good. Short drags. The 50/46 is more remenisiant of one you would find on a trail sled.
I look at the Secondary as a source to transfer all the power my primary is throwing its way and get it to the ground the best way possible. I am a firm believer of clutching your primary first. Meaning, Getting my primary as effecient as possible. From there I use the secondary to control Upshift and Backshift. IMO, major gains do not come from the Secondary, but the fine tuning of your overall ride characteristics do. While helix selection is important, i feel people spend too much time and money trying to gain performance with it. That is your Primarys job. Just my humble opinion. You may find some good reading at my site as well. Give it a shot. www.thespeedshop1.com , If I can answer anything else, let me know. Best of luck on your Clutching Quest. Oh, yeah, buy that Olav Aaen Clutching book. Its a great reference...BBY

Upon engagement your belt tries to move downwards in your secondary, the higher the number the harder that becomes
the higher the angle the faster that will happen. what if the angle was 90 degrees? then only the spring would affect the sheave action.
i'm trying to help, maybe i misunderstood what you meant. ???

Sorry, I should have read it before I posted Clutchman. Thanks for pointing it out. I edited it...BBY

BBY that's cool, we all make typos, i always think about stuff as i type, and the words don't always come out right. i was pretty sure you knew what you were trying to say, that angle deal just caught my eye. :D

Clutch tuning is balancing act between the primary and the secondary and the more sensitive your tuning the more gearing will affect the shift pattern. I use a multi angle helix to create a straight (or close) shift. I found with stock gearing I used a straight helix but with a lower ratio I used a multi-angle to get a straight shift.
This is what I ended up with last year on my 98 EXT triple
stock last setup
primary
spring-red cat orange/white
weights-#582 48g comet 57.1 g
secondary
helix- 55deg 53/47
spring-yellow red/white
spring setting 3 3
gearing-23/40 20/39
removed 1 spider washer from primary
engagement-4700 5300
shift-8400 8300-8500
sled would bogg at low end NO BOGG
:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
