I have an 2001 mxz 700 and I would like to go through the engine this season. The sled is stock other then an aftermarket can, lower gears and a clutch kit. I was thinking of the Wiesco pistons. I have ran them in several other sleds with good results but how do they run in this sled? Are they a 2 ring design and if so what do you gain and lose?

cudney has a real nice piston kit for the 700 doo.I would choose them if I done my 700 again.I talked with bill and he said they have less leak down @5000 miles than my 700 had with 1 mile, brand new.they are a 2 ring piston as well

I would have to agree with Dooman. I have seen those pistons and they are a nice piece.

I have also talked to Bill Cudney, and he claims if your compression is ok leave it alone until it needs a ring job, he claimed he had run one of their MXZ700's 6000 miles (or KM's?) on an 01 they had and it was fine, I took his advice on my 01 700 that I just got, and I will keep an eye on the compression, but according to him the 700's are not plagued with problems like the 800's and 600HO.
Just wanted to get that out there if $$$$ is a concern.

Mudweiser, The wiseco's for the 700 are still a single ring but use a chrome ring. That said, I've never seen the ring flaking occur on the 700's, I do see the ring gap open beyond spec but motors still run fine. The stock pistons are often loose and rattle a bit when cold as the miles pile up. If you want to run dual rings your options are:
1. regular 670 pistons, elko, wisco, spi (the pistons the other guys mention) all these have a tall dome and require the cylinders to be shimmed with an inset type aftermarket head. It is possible to run the stock head with a .8 base gasket but detonation may be a concern, especially at low altitude.
2. 670 HO or summitX pistons, only available from elko, they go in with no mods
single ring options:
1. stock elko, the '01 up pistons were pretty good
2. wiseco, they work well are lighter (there is a crank mod I do with the lighter pistons= revs) , have held up well in a buds sled, just make sure you have clearance for them, they are forged but are NOT stronger than the stock cast pistons, a myth IMO, let motor warm up blah blah
3. SPI, they now have a 700 piston that is a exact copy of the elko, dome and skirts are ceramic coated and they cost half as much. They use a chrome ring so flaking should not be an issue. The ring has a little more tension than stock which may transfer heat better. I built one with these pistons late last season and it's still running real strong, be aware though , they are made in taiwan.
4. Run one of the 2 ring pistons with the top dykes ring only.

ceramic on the skirts? ??? I am lost on that,I could see a teflon type coating on the skirts with ceramic domes.but why ceramic on the skirts?

dooman: my bad, the skirts are teflon or moly coated

ok i know what will fit but, what works and is worth the $ to change to? It's been a few years and there is a few oil spots soaking into the gaskets so i want to freshin it up and as long as it's down, MOD it! So what really is a gain? i was lookiing for a piston that has been used hard for a few seasons. I do plan to open up the ports.
