Im about to send my 2 440lc crankshaft to be rebuilt (91 cougar and pantera). One thing I notice on those 440 is that the end of the crankshaft wooble a little. While pulling the rope the clutch goes up and down a little. What cause this to happend? If I ask the machine shop to weld the rod pin on the pto side will it help?? so it wont happened again. The cougar is 4500miles and the pantera 3500miles. On my old 1986 pantera the same thing happened only after about 1500miles after rebuilt. I saw a lot of cats with this trouble. My step mother ext580 does this woble. My girfriend lynx 340 done this too and the crank split in 2 in the case. I must solve the problem because I dont want to pay every season or 2 for a rebuilt crankshaft or risk that the crank explode on the trail. PLease help!

After too many answer... :D I have decided to weld them on the pto side. I did speak with Andre Bernard From Atelier Adrien Bernard and I will weld. My only trouble now is what kind of piston I will put inside the engine....

i don't think that is the way to go. you should just find a good crank or buy a rebuild. as you said you don't really want to put it back in and have blow apart. the only times i have seen welded cranks are on race sleds. even then the only gain is that you wont spin it. but if you spin a bearing throw the crank out.

I will put 2 rebuilt crank for sure. But I will ask to have the 2 of them welded to prevent the problem of wooble on the pto side.
