As some may know I own a bunch of old 440lc cat sled. My question is in engine models. My 1991 pantera have a AL44L1 engine in it. My 1991 cougar have a AJ44L3 engine, and my newly bought 91 prowler have the AL44L1 engine. What is the difference between the AJ44L3 and the AL44L1?? From the outside There is no difference to be seen. I looked on browns leisure world for some of the difference...I checked for the rods/pistons same for both. Cdi box and coil is the same. Where I did find something is for the cylinder and head. Head have a different number. Cylinder too but one is called with stud and the other without stud. So I think the cylinder is the same but number different because of the stud or no stud. WOuld it be the head volume that is different for those engine? If yes I assume that they have different timing need. Does someone knows timing setup for those AJ44 and AL44? Does my Cylinder really is the same(can be interchange)? And head volume? I know its lots of questions but I must know. Thanks. SWRules

I found my answer...The carburetor size are different. And so the intake port is smaller on the aj44l3. You can see it with your eyes. The peak rpm is also a little higher on the one that have the bigger carb AL44L1. The AL44L1 have vm36-162 and the AJ44L3 have VM34-397. When you put the intake boot of the 36mm on the cylinder that has the 34 there an edge of about 1mm all around that is smaller. And nothing on the 36 cause its cast for it.
