I used them last year with good results. Mine were set on the second notch and no shim underneath. I also reamed the needle tube .004 bigger, to help the lean midrange. It worked ok.

Nick,

What year 800 do you have? I would not start with jetting reduced that much. Jets are cheap and you should step down from stock or near stock until you get a feel for your modifications. This is more important if you have an '02 800 instead of an '01.

I would also recommend you switch to Boyeson reed petals which help with the lean midrange on these engines. I have also found that the boost bottle legs on the stock reed cages do not seal completely with the stock wire hose clamps. Switching to hose clamps will guarantee no air leaks.

If you go with 942 or other adjustable needles start in a rich setting and work down.

I would have to agree with SummitAK. I have an '02 with the 942 and when I had the sled together with RK kit, I started rich (or what I thought was) and went down. I got down to 430's and the plugs looked good, medium brown after taking the sled out and running it :) . After running the sled wot and killing it with out letting off the throttle, I pulled the plugs and they were WHITE   ! I then checked it a 7000 rpm and the same thing   .
I started jetting back up, and ended back up to 480's :) .

note... during normal trail riding I had perfect wash also. Be sure you check at wot and at the mid range spot that these sleds are lean at too. Mine is at 7000...

My .022315324 cents worth :)

Summitak, I have a 01 mxz800x so I think the 450's should be ok. Kelsey said I should be able to go down to 430's ??? ..I dont know...what to do what to do ;)

Start with 480's and work your way down with caution.Spark plug are cheaper than pistons ;) I have a 01 mxz 800 as well with a head/shim and ended up with 480's using stock needle with shim on top.I ran out of snow before i got th 942's i ordered. But i'll most likely end up staying with the 480 as i like a little safety margin :D

Are the 03 Rev 800's prone to the same midrange lean condition? Or has the new pipe and revised carb spec's cured some of this issue?

Brian, What should I run the needles at, 2nd from the top (non pointy end) with or without the shim???? Thanks Nick

I used the shim on mine. I also had to drop the pilot jet down to a 15 from the stock 17.5 to clean up a blurbbly bottom end.

I am down to 410's on mains using Kelseys head. My plugs and EGT's are still rich. Some guys I have talked to are down to 390's. Sled is a '01 ZX800.

Nick,

yes, I can keep it clamped for a long time. My EGT's read about 1050*. Plugs still look rich. sled has never run better. I started at 500's but couldn't get WOT EGT's over 900*. Midrange is a different story.

Last year I ran: RKT head 13:1, Boyesen petals, Heelclickers, jetting changes, 27/43 gear.

This year will be coated wisecos, RKT head, same carb set up, heelclickers. different gear.

What does the 942's do differently from the OEM needle and the fuel update needle other than being adjustable? Does it have a slightly different shape?

They are shaped different and are adjustable...I think ;)

A picture is worth a 1000 words :D :D

I have used all 3. Myself, I like the "942" best.
