Not sure if i'm figuring this right. 89 phazer with the 1/2" lug (I know, small). Have some .875 woody's studs laying around. Looks like I would be about a 1/2" over the lug (I think). The tunnel protectors are very adequate and would work with this condition. Is this safe and/or will it work or will I be pushing studs out or ruining the track? Woody's recommends the .750 stud and as most people know they recommend .250 - .375 over the lug. Should I use them or not?

depends on your situation... 1/2" over the lug is a ton and puts more stress on the studs... so I have read.
Yes would be hard on the track
but if that's all you have??????

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and I don't want to sound insulting but I don't recall that '89 yami had a 1/2" track. Tracks are measured by total thickness. As I recall they came with .750 or .875 tracks. Are your studs push through or screw ins? Check Woody's website for proper measurement of the studs. Now, using the measurements you provided using a.875 screw in stud, minus 1/2"Lug{.500} = .375 add 1/8{.125}for the washer and your at 1/2" [like you said]. This is allot of stud, but they aren't cheap either, if they're not carbide grind them down and use them. I would probably run them anyway if they were carbide. I'd make sure I ran a large number of them to distribute the load on the track.
If they're push through .875's and your a .500 to a .750 track it's all good!!!
One more note, if that is the original track on your '89, it's not gonna last much longer anyway so the gamble is low so go for it and enjoy the benifit of studs.Think snow!!! Dave

The 89 had a .510" lug.the .875" woody will give you 3/8 above the lug.I would install at least 48 in the center but if you have enough do 96. It will help put less stress on the studs resulting in no tear outs but if its just a beater sled use what you got unless the track is in great shape and you want to save it.I still remember riding those slip and slide 1/2" tracks.let me know if you have any questions.thanks rich

run 96 of the .875s it will be fine and if you are agressive with it then step up to 128 down the middle( assuming its a 48 pitch)

I run 1.25s in a .88 Doo track with 192 down the middle and have never pulled a stud and don't lose a lot of drag races off the line either

I think you guys are correct (except richierich I don't thik I get 3/8", my actual measurement on the track is near .500"). I think i'm going to go ahead and give her with the .875". It just looks like a lot. This little phazer should have a hell of a hole shot. The only other thing I worry about is in front of the drive cogs (bulkhead), it seems to get a little closer than I like there, might have to put something there to protect. Like I said the tunnel protectors on their should be adequate measuring at .580" depth.

Richierich ,You jogged my memory with the slippin' and slidin'. my friend had one of those .510s we called his sled ;THE ZAMBONI 'cause he'd spin all the snow off the corners and if you were behind him you had to skate around the corner

Cmon now i'm never wrong :D honest though thats what the track is .but it might stick out a bit more since the older tracks were alittle thinner then the new ones.either way you'll be good

spaceman.yep my buds still got a 92 exciter and he put 6" carbide on front after i told him no.that sucker will whip the back end around like no tommorrow.I make sure he rides way back.
