my friend has a 580 ext efi with no c.d.i........but i have a bear cat 550 for parts,can i take the carbs, cdi, coils and put it ont he 580.?? any thoughts would be helpful...thanks

do your self a favor and just go buy a cdi for the efi sled, i know that the 97 zr580 efi is one smokin sled for a twin, my brother inlaw has one and it really cranks, it surprised me, that 550 bearcat is way differant then the ext efi, i dont think it'll even run with that cdi...

Are you sure your talking about the cdi box? You can get a aftermarket one for less than $100. Or are you talking about the computer went bad which would be much more costly? If it is just the cdi, get a new cdi. Actually, don't quote me, but according to the catalog i'm looking at, the bearcat cdi will work in the ext.


I think a swap can be done from efi to carb, once again, don't quote me. Check browns leisure world to verify parts are the same. I would think the timing would remain the same as well. Consider everything before you do it though:

Throttle cable
Carbs
Choke install
Choke cables
Old wire harness out, different wire harness in?
Ignition switch?

If your looking for a challenge, it may be kind of fun. Let me know if your getting rid of any efi equipment.

yes it would be more of a project than fixing it to ride it.....just have all the spare parts and 2 months of no snow yet.... :)

I would just put a new cdi in.You can't beatthe way an efi runs.Doesn't matter if ti's warm or cold it runs the same.
