I purchased a 01 ZL 550 for my wife. It only has 490 miles. It's in showroom condition and is completely stock. It does not have electric start or reverse. I think I got a good price at $2,300.

We ride the trails in both the lower and up of Michigan. She rides pretty aggressive.

I know I want to add studs. Can anyone tell me how many and does anyone have a good contact to get them at a good price?

I am thinking about adding reverse. Please let me know if this is good or if I should not add it.

Does anyone know of any problems or things to watch out for with this sled.

Thanks

96 studs down the center would be good for that sled...try jumpstartracing.com for a good price on studs..

I've been running those studs for about 3 years on different sleds and never had a problem with them..they are good studs for the money...hope they work out for ya!

woody golddiggers 96 in the center, the track lug is probably a .75 so you should run .875 studs. I have them on my pantera and all my buddies run them... never bent never failed always gripped

I've got a 02 ZL550 ESR for my wife and for my backup. It's a great trail sled. Check your track before studding, the 02 has 1 inch lugs. I did 96 gold diggers. The only complaint we've ever had is stiff throttle pull.

Good luck!

I have a 2000 ZL 500 with 93 studs down the middle. Seems like plenty and it still handles great. As far as reverse, we have 3 cats all with reverse. I wouldn't be without it and have had zero problems. No electric start but not really needed with EFI.

Thanks for the info.

I think it's a 1 inch track but I will measure it to make sure.

If it is a 1 inch track what length of stud are you using? I have seen 1.075 and 1.175.

Has anyone clutched the 550?

Just want to know if it's worth it?

Thanks

try this link... http://www.woodystraction.com/appguide2.htm

It looks like the '01 sled had .850 lugs, so you would use 1.000" studs. The '02 sled has 1.000 lugs and used 1.075".

I would think a clutch kit would be overkill, unless your wife really likes to hammer her sled.

Try riding it for a season, I think she'll be happy.

Driftbuster I had a 93 550 ext with a p.s.i single pipe ,trail ported
carbs bored and a comb of black magic and d.d . clutch parts.Change the gearing
if it is the same as it was in 93 (check a cat book at your dealers)for a piston
port motor this girl got up went.It could hold it own and beat most all the 700
cat of it time.It was a very free rolling sled (hardly any rolling fiction in suspenion)That all I can remember about it know good luck ..

I had a 97 Cougar 550, and added a 1.25 inch lug track and a Black Magic clutch kit. It really made a difference. On the pond I would take ALL the ZR 500's and 600's for about the first 1/8 of a mile. Of course after that it was all over for me as I watched them blow by me. :p But the changes were very nice for trail riding too.

I also had plastic skis, which you already have, and fox shocks, which you probably don't want.

Thanks for the sugestions.

According the stud websites the track and it's .85 lug so I will purchase the 1 inch studs. I think I might try to buy them at the Novi show if they are willing to give some deals. If not I will buy them from the websites you have shown me. $1 per stud including backer sounds reasonable.

I also picked up a AD Boivin coupling kit. Several people told me this helps improve the ride.

Thanks
