who other than me has gout ? my brother ran my leg over with a tractor years ago and that is where it flares up. i don't drink much booze, ie: beer or two since christmas so it can't be that. what do others do to control it ?

That would be just my luck, to catch something that would make me stop drinking.

Not that I drink alot, but I recently had to alter my diet dramatically due to a family history of high colesterol, and one of the few things I still get to enjoy is a nice cold beer.

Hope your feeling better Paul,

I know a few guys with gout and what they tell me is that shellfish and orange juice make it worse. Hope this helps[U] (these tools are pretty cool when you know what they do) http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif *http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

ballsout1,
*you're lucky you only get it that often with all the ethnic cooking there in buffalo a person with gout could get it everyday.

Its funny you asked that paul.
i got it for the first time in my life about 3 weekends ago.
until then i had thought it was something old people got.
i had a kidney transplant 13 years ago and the kidney is not and never has functioned at 100%. although it works well.
The pain in my foot though was excrusiating(spelling?).
i couldn't put my weight on it. when i tried to walk it felt like someone drove a spike through my foot.
Diet helps out the most though and a low salt and meat intake helps dramatically. i control thisand i'm fine.
i have not gotten it back since... knock on wood.

Paul go get a can of pie cherries or fresh cherries if you can find them. And stay away from wild game meat.

I had a boss that had gout and he would miss work a week at a time. All he did was live with it.
I don't have gout but I do have Arthritis thanks to reconstructive knee surgery. I haven't bothered taking anything for it other than liquor. I'll take enough pills when I reach 60.

I too suffer from the same. All it is is a high uric acid content in your blood resulting in deposits in your joints that hurt like ####.What i found that worked great for me is drink between 3-6 bottles of water each day.I have been doing this since october and have not had a problem since.I still am able to drink beer http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif and eat meat.I just don't consume that much moose and venicine as gamier meats are much higher in uric acid.I hope this helps paul because i know it sucks when it hits.I'm only 28 but i was hobbling around like an old man back in the fall http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/nervous.gif E-mail me if you need any other tips paul.

Sorry to hear your hurting Paul, when I was in Holland a guy who was with us had bad gout,so bad he couldnt leave the hotel room.I wouldnt recommend naproxin at all as it rots the gut,I have a wrecked back and knees from many years of abuse and this drug they used to give to me untill it started stomach probs. My personal choice is Advil liquid gels.they only have a small amount of ibuprophen in them and dont bother my stomach. The guy who was with us in Holland said the damp weather made it really bad.Hope you are better soon , Ill send ya some cupcakes to help you feel better. http://www.snowmobileworld-s2.com/forums/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sleepy.gif

LOL, yeah, must not be on dial-up like me, searching takes forever! I always thought gout was related to improperly healed injuries?

my dad has some of the worst crashes on motorcycles and sleds than anyone other than evel knievel , to the point that he doesn't have any toes , knee and replacement heal and hip (his 3rd so far) on his right leg , tibia and fibula are fused together so right leg doesn't bend but insists that gout has hurt the worst , GOOD LUCK PAUL

What exactly does your Dad do? Is he some sort of daredevil, or is he living life on the edge?

Unfortunately I know a lot about gout. For those of you asking, a natural substance in all foods called purines is converted to uric acid by your body. Some foods have more purines than others. Everybody has uric acid in their blood stream. For some of us, our bodies don't get rid of the uric acid very well. The uric acid crystalizes in joint tissue, typically in the feet, ankles or knees. So imagine tiny shards of glass in a joint in your foot. There have been days it takes me 3 minutes to put a sock and shoe on my foot.

Paul, as a chronic gout sufferer, (used to be every other week) I highly recommend talking to your doc. There is a preventative med called Allopurinol, but once you start it, you're on it for your life, I am. Cholacine is a drug that is supposed to rid your body of uric acid once you have an attack, all it does for me is cause digestive problems. Celebrex is hands down the best cure for the pain I've ever found.

I've tried a bunch of natural remedies and Cherry juice does seem to work a bit. The herbal cures on the net are a waste of $, I tried them. The tart cherry concentrate is pretty good. There are a bunch of foods to avoid as many people on the board mentioned. Drink LOTS of water. Unfortunately yeast (in bread or beer) is very high in purines so I too have to watch my beer intake.
