i just did a compression check on my sled. it was done with wide open throttle, cold engine, and a plug in the opposite cylinder i wasnt testing, is this the right way to check compression on sleds? i got a reading of 121psi on mag side(exhaust side), and 124psi on PTO side(clutch side). what should the compression be on this sled, minimum and maximum. it has 2050 miles on it and i think these readings seem pretty good. what are your thought

i forgot to add i am at sea-level elevation and the temperature was around 58 degrees. on a completely bone stock engine.

Sounds ok it should be 125psi but those readings you took are fine.

i was thinkin that once it reads below 112psi or so then it will be time to re-ring or rebuild. what are your thoughts on this? what is considered too low of compression on this sled?

Around 105 would be a good time..

quebec#1 thanks for all you help i really appreciate it a lot. i dont know if you have much experience with this sled but when it is time for a rebuild i plan on porting it, and milling the head. do you reccomend oem or wiseco or other aftermarket pistons? is the cylinder boreable at all and or can it be clearenced to use wiseco pistons? who does the best porting work for these sleds for trail/lake? also how far can u take these heads before you have to run race gas? remember i want to get the most realiable horsepower on pump gas for the sled so nothing to drastic. but i do want some decent gains. also do you know of anyother little things to do on this sled to make it run a bit quicker besides clutching. right now it has a custom air horn kit that was made by my local dealer. the tops of the horns are bigger and then the horns themselves are shorter but much fatter guy says its good for around 3.5hp with stock jetting. i also changed to a different exhaust valve spring and diaphram combo which he also said makes some good gains. what are your thoughts on all this and whats next to gain so more performance without going to crazy? thanks alot

Stick with the oem parts, this machine already turns out around 118 hp, not bad for a 600, for some gains go with some v-force reeds and slp cheater head set , probaly good for a 10hp in all, im sure they have a kit for the 600 motor, Or maybe go for a good single pipe and can combo...

If you plan on porting, slp could do it for you..I think it then runs on 91 octane fuel.

THe V.E.S. allows for pretty wild porting from factory, I haven't heard of more than 3-4 hp with porting on the valved engines. I have not heard great things about the Wiseco pistons and I believe there are a few aftermarket co. that offer big bore kits on the 600. Check your mileage with these new high air flow mods you've done, might be good for racing, but might hurt on the trail. Reeds and heads are probably your best bet. Lots of aftermarket heads around.

Save your money on the port job. Go with a 660 kit built by Struthers. It's been nicknamed the 800 killer. Also, don't buy into what everyone says, 3 to 4 hp is not easily attained on that machine. Your dealer is yanking you by the short and curly's. The only thing a different spring will do is alter the HP curve, max HP stays the same since it is achieved with the valves fully open. $hit, a set of SLP twins only claim to make 10 HP, and your dealer thinks a little airhorn tweak will get you 3.5? Does this look like your dealer??

I had an 01 600 that I traded in back in the spring. I did a compression test after the season was over and had almost exactly the same numbers you did. The sled had about 4000 miles on it. That 600 VES twin is a strong engine. I wouldn't do much to it. Maybe reeds and a boost bottle to clean up the fuel puddling at idle. Add a good clutch kit and go kick some butt. I wouldn't waste money on a big bore, although the 660 hauls, it also costs alot. If the performance isn't what you want, buy a bigger sled, it will be much more cheaper and reliable. OR, put some 500 decals on it and go race everyone and don't open the hood!! Did that in 99'. Had a 700 with 500 decals, WHAT A BLAST!! No one EVER asked to open the hood, just asked me what I had done to it. I told them, boost bottle, reeds, clutch kit, jetting. I wasn't lying!

Have fun.
