yamamaniac 10-24-2003, 05:10 PM [FONT=Arial][COLOR=blue]Hey everyone. Im having some troubles:( over the summer I left my vmax on a stand. when i got it out yesterday, it took a long time starting. when I finnally got it going it wouldnt run right. I found out that the base of my engine is right full of fuel(or so i assume). Fuel coming out between the man. and the pipe is what led me to believe so. But anyway, how do I get it out!!?? I dont believe yamy 500's have drain screws on the base. NEED HELP BAD :( what do i do????
yamamaniac 10-25-2003, 06:29 PM I need some help guys -- gotta get this thing runin :(
485ccofphazer 10-25-2003, 11:00 PM Put this topic on the Yamaha forum, also maybe the General forum, so more people will notice it. I'm sure someone on here can help you, because I can't, sorry.
Formulaman 10-26-2003, 05:17 AM Well since you have allready sawed away on the go string like a crazed lumber jack my advise is good luck with the season because it looks like it's gonna be a costly one lol, no seriously dump lots of oil in the cyls. turn it over BY HAND/CLUCH method to make sure she don't hydraulic on ya, keep cleaning the plugs until she'll run on both, or three or whatever and keep an eye on the plugs. If don't clean out and run like before then you need lots of cash for the parts that we'll have to replace for ya shipping and handling extra!!
yamamaniac 10-28-2003, 12:51 AM Geuss what??!! I pulled the rear end of the sled as far as it would go without the front bumper hitting. I shut off the fuel, and took the pipe off. Then i took the plugs out and turned it over. nothing came out though. now im getting worried. Im afraid you could be right formulaman. $$$$ i might have burned up a piston :hallo5:
michahicks 11-05-2003, 03:47 PM Pull the sled all the way over onto it's left side. That will let the fuel run from the crankcase into the transfer ports where it's easily blown in to the cumbustion chamber and out as you pull it through quickly by hand with the spark plugs out.
yamamaniac 11-05-2003, 06:58 PM should i leave the pipe off while doing this??? i also assume to shut the gas off :D

Good call on the technique for getting the fuel out Michahicks. I usually just pull the jugs and use a syphon tool if it's hydro locked. But putting it up on it's side is the way we used to get the water out after one would go diving.
I don't think I quite understand what all the talk is about all the expensive parts that are going to be needed. As long as it didn't lock, everything should be ok. The only thing I can see that could cause other problems is having so much fuel that there was not enough oil. But it wasn't run under load, so I really don't see where there should be any problems.
After you get it all cleaned out so that it runs right, you may want to pull the carbs and replace the needle and seats. That is where your problem started.
yamamaniac 11-13-2003, 08:42 PM Still havent tried getting the fuel out. I havent had two guys around the shop.
Im pretty sure that its not in the carbs. The top end was rebuilt when the previous owner took the sled to my dealer last winter(3000 miles ago). They probably checked the carbs all over.
my fuel pump isnt working right. They have had lots of trouble with them. and my machine has 8700 miles on it, so i'm do for a new one. I thought about doing away with it, and mixing my gas but that would stink seems how I have to keep a steady flow of money going into the tank.
Why I really think it happened was, because I had it on the stand all summer. about 15 inches from the ground to the bumper. At first I didnt think it had that much to do with my problem but, I cant think of anything else that would cause it.
And of course, I never thought to shut the gas off!!!
could this be my problem???

If you had the rear end raised for the summer and if you did indeed fill the case with fuel, you do have a carb problem. That problem is the needle and seat allowing fuel to pass by. Yes the fuel shut off would have taken care of that, but IMHO that shouldn't be necessary if the seats are good. Just because the top end was rebuilt doesn't mean that the seats were replaced. There are very few mechanics that would go to the trouble if you weren't already having the problem.
My last 2 cents
yamamaniac 11-23-2003, 03:48 PM thank you, it's just whenever WE do the top end, we at least CLEAN the carbs.... but anyway thanks for the help, i think im going to tear the carbs down. :D
