If you want to keep your exhaust and engine looking like new, spray the exposed parts of the exhaust with WD-40 after every ride. This is what I do. When I finish riding for the day, I park the sled on the trailer and turn it off. I then lift the cowl to let the engine cool just a little. By the time I get the WD-40 from the truck, the exhaust has cooled enough. I spray the exhaust so that it has a nice even coat on all of the exposed parts, right up to and including the manifold. Don't worry, it won't ignite. The next time you ride, it will burn off after about 5 mins, this is ok. Just redo the above when you are done riding again for the day. I did this on my previous 97 machine and my exhaust looked like new, black and no rust. The other good thing is, the overspray from the WD-40 is good for cleaning up inside the engine compartment. It helps prevent the crud from belts and general grime from sticking to anything. Just take a rag and wipe and excess off. My machine looked like new underneath the hood. The trick is to spray the exhaust while it is still hot, but not too hot. If they are too hot, it will completely evaporate off. Do this and you'll be amazed how well your exhaust and engine compartment will look at the end of the season.
