NOTICED PROBLEM IN 02. AFTER STARTING SLED FOR THE FIRST TIME INTHE FALL IT SMOKED EXCESIVLY AND LEFT A LARGE PUDLE OF OIL UNDER THE MUFF ON THE FLOOR. SAME TING THIS YEAR. SLED STORED W REAR UP OFF TRAILER. WILL OIL LEAK THOUGH OIL PUMP? IS THIS TYPICAL? SHOULD I RE-BUILD THE OIL PUMP?
ZR Rider 10-29-2003, 10:44 AM How big of a pool?? Dose it get bigger over the course of the fall??
I would go with that when you fog the engine, the EFI sense a lean code and dumps more fuel and oil into the motor, now the only place for it to go is out the pipe and the lower end! Not saying that you have enough to fill the lower end, but enough to really coat the pipe!! So over the course of the summer, the excessive oil in the pipe runs down the pipe and can, pooling under the outlet!
This is one reason I don't fog my 97! I start mine every few weeks instead.
Have you ever noticed how somkey your sled is when you first start it?? And if you shut it off before the sled clears itself you tend to flow plugs... same idea!
IM NOT CONVINCED ITS FROM FOGGING AND FOOLING THE EFI. BECAUSE ITS JUST OIL AND I ONLY PULLED IT 3-4 TIMES ,IT SHOULD'VE STARTED. THEN I CHECKED PLUGS AND THEY WERE DRIPPING WHITH OIL . I DONT THINK ITS ENOUGH TO BLOW THE CRANK SEALS. THEN I PULLED WHIT NO PLUGS, TRIED AGAIN SAME STEPS . THEN ADDED A CUPPLE DROPS GAS AND IT COUGHT THEN PUTTED TO LIFE .TATS WHEN SHE BLEW OIL ON THE FLOOR-1 oz OR MORE. YOU KNOW14" CIRCLE , WET THAT KINDATHING
ZR Rider 10-29-2003, 03:24 PM Well... from what I have seen with my 97. If I don't let it run for about 2 to 3 minutes and clear itself out when not being rode in the winter (like in the driveway in the fall), it will fowl plugs as fast as I can put them in!
Not trying to start a pi##ing match here, just telling you what I have seen with my ZR!
Here's something for you to do... take your pipe off and can and see how much oil residue is inside. Every time I start my ZR in the fall (again it's not like this once the sled has been rode) it gives a hugh smoke cloud till it cleans out the motor and the exhaust! And yes my oil pump is set up right!
Look down at the oil pump arm, it's not suppose to move until about 1/8 of the throttle has opened!
Is yours moving to soon?? Could be dumping hugh amounts of oil in it!
SOUNDS GOOD ILL TAKE A LOOK AT THE OIL PMP ARM N PULL THE Y PIPE . IT DOESNT FOWL DURING SEASON AND I DONT HAVE EXCESIVE OIL USE.... IM STILL WONDER ING WEATHER I SOULD BOTHER TO RE-BUILD THE PUMP ? I MEAN WHY FIX IF IT ISNT BUSTED? WELL I GUESS IF THE PUMP WAS BAD IT WOULD STARVE THE MOTOR AND THEN I WOULDNT BE GUESSING....THANKS . LET ME KNOW IF YOU PICK UP ON ANY INFO. LATER.
Good2Go 10-30-2003, 08:56 PM does it run ok after its been started and after its run for a while after the storage, then when u start it up for a 2nd time its ok?
94ZR580 10-31-2003, 09:12 PM This does not sound abnormal to me. The sled is always going to smoke more in warmer weather, and especially after first start of the year. If runs good after it clears itself out, then I would say it is OK.
puree 11-01-2003, 12:37 AM zr rider,,,,r u saying that I should not fog my f7?? I should just start it about every 2 weeks?? I would have no problem doing that, just to hear her purr all summer long!!!
tunedbyear 11-01-2003, 06:45 AM sounds to me like it's taking that many pulls to get gas from tank and at the same time pumping oil into motor. if it's ok the rest of the season. i'd crank it over a few times with old plugs. then remove put a little gas in cyl. and put new ones in br9eya and try. i believe there is a check valve incorperated into filter in tank to prevent this. so you might have one sticking. i start mine once a week and put new ones in close to riding season.

I start my 95 zr 580 efi every couple weeks throughout the summer. Believe me they smoke and smoke and smoke. It only take about 2 minutes and I can't see across my garage. I believe the factory set all 580 efi's to the rich side. I would definately say the smoke is normal. Not sure about the puddle of oil. Do you have any leaks in your lines? Are your lines connected to your intake boots? When I run mine I get a moisture spot below the exhaust but not an oil puddle.
Good2Go 11-01-2003, 09:58 PM i've got u beat mopar in 2min i cant see across my yard. :)
snofrog 11-01-2003, 11:33 PM when your oil level is higher than the outlet for your injection it can create a siphon effect so cat put a check valve in to stop this.however there are some pumps out there that have this oil valve fail.also if storing your sled in a hot trailer all summer it thins the viscosity of the oil and this exaserbates the problem.Mark

SNOFROG,YAH ,THAT ALL SOUNDS GOOD. ITS GOT OIL COMEING OUT OF THE EXHAUST SYSTEM JOINTS;Y PIPE, PIPE N SILENCER.SO I GUESS IWONT SWEAT IT FOR NOW. I CLAMPED THE MAIN OIL LINE AND HUNG THE KEY ON THE CLAMP FOR NOW . I NEED TO PREP SHOCKS , BEARINGS,CLUCH,INTAKE BOOTS,BLA BLA BLA. SHE RUNS STRONG I JUST DONT NEED ANY MORE PUDDLES . IM SURE THAT AGOOD PERMANANT DROP IN TEMP WILL HELP,EFI N VISCOSITY.
BI THE WAY WHERE IS THE CHECK VAL AND ISHOULD BE ABLE TO PULL THE PUMP WITHOUT MESSEN WITH THE MOTOR..... RIGHT? JBK. :undercover:
Snowmad 11-09-2003, 03:59 PM I had one off them check valves stuck in open.(powder extr.-97) :inlove:
This almost drained the oil tank over summer.
You need to replace the valve. Don’t try to clean it.
The valve is cheaper than a new engine.
If one valve is stuck wide open, there is a possibility the rest of the valves can’t get enough pressure to open, ending in a disaster.

10-4. THANKS MUCH. :sly:
ZR Rider 11-12-2003, 09:23 AM Not trying to flog a dead horse here... but I don't think it's your check valves in the oil pump. If you had a leak in the pump, you would fill the crank case with oil, empty the oil tank, but I don't think it would fill enough to run out the pipe!
Honestly, When you fogged that sled... there is a ton of oil in that pipe, over time, the residue has run down to the outlet and puddled!
Secondly, if you do have a bad check valve, and you pinch off the line... besure to bleed the oil line getting all the air out. Then when you start it for the first time, run a length of mechanic wire down, attach it to the pump arm, raise the arm WFO and secure it... start the sled and let it run for awhile with the arm fully open so the lines to the carb boots will bleed as well!
RIGHT I HEAR YA ZR RIDER. I HAVNT LOOKED AT THE LINE SINCE I PINCHED IT OFF . IM NOT SURE IF IT WILL SHOW AN AIR BUBBLE BELOW THE PINCH- EVEN IF IT IS THE CHECK V- BECAUSE IVE CUT IT OFF FROM THE "PRESURE" FROM THE OIL TANK.
THE BIG QUESTION IS DID I OR DIDNT I FOG IT?
ICANT REMEMBER.
BUT I APRIECIATE EVERYONES INPUT,JBK.
