I recently got a letter in the mail and have been hearing about some trails that were shut down around gaylord-grayling area. Does anyone have more info on this? I heard it was around 4500 acres of land. Thanks :cussing: :cussing: :cussing: :cussing: :cussing: :cussing: :cussing:

Yes that's right! 4700 acres of STATE LAND shut down! Personally I think it's politcs with the oil company's. If you are a member of MSA you should be getting your magazine soon with a acticle about it, if not, join.
I let my membership lapse could anyone give me the address to MSA so I can rejoin? :dazed:

I heard that they also shut down some trails around East Jordan. Any truth to that?

That statement was printed on the MSA literature they sent out and I took it as a way to get people like me to sign up for membership. They go on to make it sound like the more members they get the lower the possibilities of this type of thing happening. It worked for me as I signed up my family but Im not sold that its true either way.

I found this information on the trail report section at www.gaylord-mich.com.
In Response To Your Questions:
In June 2003, the approximate 4700-acre Deward Tract located south west of Gaylord was closed to all motorized vehicles. Many at the Hastings Show asked us how this affected snowmobiling in the Gaylord area. This closing DOES NOT affect our trail system. Our designated snowmobile trail system goes around the Deward area. Please do not hesitate to call our Information Center at 1-800-345-8621.
I still think its wise to join msa and your local club.

As far as I know, no actual snowmobile trails got closed. Only state land surrounding the Manistee River.

Some of the BlueBear trail goes thru there, wonder what the route will be around that? It will have to be roads I'am sure and we all know what the snowplow drivers think of snowmobilers :hallo1: :cussing:
This will make one more problem for Starvation Lake, bad enough now with cops and DNR looking to fatten the budget in tickets. I rarely go that way now because of them, looks like I probably will never go their now. Dammed if I'am riding roads.

I think you are right about the oil companies, I have noticed in recent years around Atlanta and the Pigeon forest land, that trails we have ridden for years have been block by piles of timbers or stumps, all done by oil companys that have mineral rights for the area. The land is not off limit to snowmobiliers, they just make it as tough as possible to get your sled into certain areas.
