i bought this sled in march of this year and haven't really ridden it. but i had it out tonight for a bit and notice at about 5200rpm to 5500rpm it wants to surge. feels like a cylinder cutting in and out. the plugs are all fine and it idles nice and goes like stink once it's past this point. i've had the carbs apart and haven't had time to adjust the slides just yet. it is all stock. 1500 miles on sled. keep in mind i'm not made of money, and i don't want to do bunch of mods to this sled i just want to remedy the problem. thanks for any info. i hope to hell it's something simple.

When you say it surges, I take it you are on the sled moving slow correct? If so you probably have a flat spot in your drive belt. If you or someone tried to take off with the brake on and left a flat spot on the drive belt it will surge at slow speeds. Put a new drive belt on and try it. :D

I had this problem on a sled one time and I had one of my spark plug sockets bad,,,,,makes no sense, it would idle just fine and ran wide open just fine,,,,but through the mid it surged,,,,when I changed it, I changed both and the darn thing didnt surge again,,,,,,,,may not be your problem, but it is easy to check,,,

It could be that your carbs are out of sync.

On those engines that is where the torque and power band seems to start. It might just be that you are throttling in and out of the power band and that is what is making it seem like it is surging. The ZRT's are very strong runners at above the 5500-5800 rpm range due to the piping and factory porting on them. They are not that great of a low rpm machine and what you may be noticing is this fact. Your clutching may need to be adjusted a touch as it may be forcing your rpms down in to the lower power range when it is backshifting. I've found that you should try to keep the backshift to no lower then the 5800 rpm range for quick upshifts.

sounds like your throttle safty switches are going bad, those are the wires coming off your carbs. in your tool kit,.if you have one with this sled, you'll see a 2 prong connector, male\female, with a wire loop. this plugs in to by pass your kill switch and throttle switches, located just below the handle bars, unplug the kill switch, plug this into the side that goes back towards the engine, and you should be fine, i've been running my sled like this for 3 years...............

If the carb switches are acting up, it's better IMO to bypass just them or adjust them out to the limit, that way you can still keep the throttle safety switch and kill switch.
