The TOP D trail has been rerouted west of Hwy. 11 @ Trout Creek up to the village of Nipissing & back across Hwy. 11 @ a point north of Powassan. It is marked on this season's NNTA map. The Northern Sno Trails newspaper said the attempt to reroute TOP D east of Powassan failed.

Apparently before last season the local club lost permission to cross property(s) east of Powassan.

RevIAm just got back from a trip up north & said they had problems around the Trout Creek/Powassan area on TOP D. There was no gas in Trout Creek & they saw no signs showing the SSR700 trail off TOP D as shown on the NNTA map. Does this trail exist?

Oggy.

The SSR700 trail used to be the D north of Trout creek. That trail is closed because of a landowner despute. You must head to nippising village to get north on the D trail. And that trail is new and is being logged.Make sure you get gas in South river because Lang's fuel station in Trout creek closed last summer.

They were coming from Dorset & 2 guys ran out before the next stop. I'm not sure where they got gas.

SSR700 is marked on the 2004 NNTA map. So there is no way to get into Powassan now?

We got caught in the Trout Creek/Powassan void....We got gas in Sunridge as advised from guys on this site. When we got into trout creek we stopped at the resturant, I think maybe JT You cross the New HWY 11 at the over pass just north of the resturant. Once over the Hwy follow the road up two roads to "Weiber" rd. (I think it was called) Then up to...maybe the first or second right. You can see the lights at Hwy 11. The road starts with a "P" just can't remember the name. When you get to HWY 11 the trail is right on your left. The 700. It follows the HWY. We took this out to Nippising then followed the stakes on the lake into North Bay.

How long did it take?

Sorry for all the questions, but I am planning a 4 or 5 day trip from Cookstown to Sudbury, over to Northbay, then work our way back down to Cookstown.
Just wondering if I might be pushing it..
Thanks..

I have gone from Barrie to North Bay in one real long day. We went from Barrie to Huntsville. Huntsville to North Bay. Notrth Bay to Sudbury. Sudbury to Parry Sound. Parry sound to Barrie. The days varied. We had a brake down in Kearney for 3-4 hours so that put us behind. Parry Sound trails were a real problem so that really delayed us. Email me if you need more info

The restaurant your thinking of is TJ's. A very good place to eat and stay at. Have stayed there once on our RAP tour and have eaten there 2-3 times.

The Doo dealer in Trout creek gave me a small map with a road route to powassn. It took about 15 minutes to run from TJ's to topD in powassen. The roads were a bit nasty but it sure saved a hell of a run around.

This time of year road running can be dicey unless you've had fresh snow. Hopefully things will be better next year. I'd like to ride that area as it's been a few years since I've been up that way.

Doonut- you are right! The roads were " VERY NASTY" on our trip thru Trout Crrek on our trip too. Hopefully next year the OFSC will have another snow trail through there so we do not have to run the roads.

Snowmobile trail suit settled out of court
By Nancy Barner

POWASSAN: A controversial court case against the Municipality of Powassan, over a proposed snowmobile trail, has been dropped and settled out of court.
On March 16, the matter officially came to an end when council endorsed two new by-laws — one that sets out rules for the use of certain unopened road allowances in the municipality; and, another that establishes an agreement between the Municipality of Powassan and the South Shore Restoule Snowmobile Club (SSRSC).
The plaintiffs in the case — Ron Campbell, et al (Ed Alexander, Alex McIntyre and Klaus Wand) — first sought legal action against the municipality when they felt their concerns about fencing, surveying and environmental issues were ignored by both the SSRSC and the former council.
The snowmobile club had approached council about the use of certain unopened road allowances in the municipality for the construction of a new snowmobile trail to the east of the downtown Powassan core.
When a group of landowners, headed by Campbell, objected to the proposed snowmobile trail, an ad hoc committee was struck by council in an attempt to find a resolution.
According to Powassan councillor Christine Golding, the committee was comprised of representatives from the snowmobile club, the former council and the landowners.
When recommendations from the committee were brought forward to council, the landowners felt their main concerns, primarily about fencing, were not included, explained Councillor Golding (former Chairperson of the Powassan Ratepayers’ Association) .
The previous council proceeded anyway and was prepared to let the snowmobile club develop the new trail on unopened road allowance between Lots 10 and 11 of Concessions 4-15 in the former Township of South Himsworth (now Powassan).
Consequently, the landowners sought and won an injunction against the municipality, effectively stopping the development of the proposed snowmobile trail.
After the November 10, 2003 municipal elections, the landowners began working with the newly-elected officials of Powassan council, trying to find an amicable solution that would end the court battle, said Golding.
To that end, council tried to facilitate a solution that would satisfy all parties. However, when officials with SSRSC failed to respond, Councillor Golding explained, the legal proceedings forged ahead and a pre-trial hearing was held in North Bay on March 3.
According to the Powassan councillor, pre-trial judge Michael Bolan indicated at that time, the matter could be settled out of court and there would not be any awarding of costs.
Councillor Golding, who intervened on the landowners’ behalf, is delighted with the out-of-court settlement.
“The landowners’ rights and agri-businesses have been protected, the club (SSRSC) gets their trail if they decide to go ahead with it, and the municipality restored its relationship with the ratepayers,” stated Golding, following council’s passage of the by-laws at the March 16 meeting.
Speaking for Powassan council, Golding added, “We’re thrilled it’s over and finalized ... it has cost everyone, and equally, because everyone had to have lawyers.”
Costs for the parties have not been tallied, as yet, advised Councillor Golding, but she estimates they are likely in the $10,000-$14,000 range.
Ron Campbell is also thrilled the landowners’ concerns have finally been heard and addressed.
“I’m really happy with this council,” said Campbell. “They have listened to us, obviously.”
Campbell believes the matter could have been settled long ago, had the previous council not dug in its heels and refused to listen to the landowners.
Commented the lead plaintiff, “The sad part is, we never needed to go here. It (the matter) could have been resolved by (the former council) addressing our concerns in the first place.”
Golding concurs and credits the present council with being both reasonable and willing to work together with the ratepayers of the municipality.
That, the councillor contends, is evident in the passage of by-laws on March 16.
The new agreement between the municipality and the snowmobile club stipulates, among other things, that the SSRSC is responsible for both fencing, signage and gating along the trail, to protect abutting properties. The use of the trail is also restricted to snowmobiles, preventing it from becoming a multi-use trail.

It sure is worth the trip. The prettiest part of the trip was comming out on to Lake Nipissing at dark. You look accross the Lake and the lights of North Bay were pretty impressive. Reguardless of the trail problems it's always an adventure.

Does anyone know if the signage in this area will be improved in this "black hole" this winter? I see on the Near North map that there is no mention of no gas in Trout Creek. Sundridge & South River both are roughly 20 klicks off of TOP D. From Nipissing to Kearney it's approximately 170 klicks. Not a long haul if you have a full tank, but a problem if you leave either place w/ a partial tank.

Maybe an alternative would be to use SSR #711, NN #440 & C105D, bypassing Trout Creek altogether. C105D passes between South River & Sundridge.

Any other comments?
