Hey guys..our tahoe needs tires..bad. What do you reccomend for all around traction and wear? (We are looking at M+S tires right off the bat)

Hey rocket,

I tried Toyo tires for my diesel pickup and have blown them out after only 30,000 miles. I think the diesel motor is too much for a normal tire.
Also try BFG a/t or long trail.....depending on how aggressive you want to be.
I will never go back to Japanese tires

Yeah..I was thinking either BFG AllTerrain T/A KO or Bridgestone Dueller AT REVO. My dad has Wrangler AT/S on his van and they seem ok. Haven't looked at pricing as of yet though..I'm thinking those Duellers are going to be expensive. They are rated very highly on alot of sites.

Hey Rocket,

Get BFG's I have a had a truck since I was 15 and ihave had BFG's on three vehicles and always lasted very well and rode expceptionally. I would definitely recopmmend it. Definitely no Yokohama's. Too soft for Canada...

and sorry by the way I have to root for the argo's. My wife is friends with Mike O'shea wife and I started watching the locals from that.

The BFG AT's are good, but stay away the Long Trails! They are junk, I have a set of them on my Blazer and do not like them at all! They are noisy as mud tires but have no traction.

Hey Rocket, take a look at Interco's TrXus Mud Terrain. It is a newer tire that they are trying to break into the market against the BFG AT's with. They are around $25 cheaper then the BFG's, I'm looking at them for my vehicle right now. So far alls I've found so far are good reviews.

Rocketman, I would recomend B F G longtrails, I thing they would be a little quieter & last longer the the BFG all terrain's. Just put the long trails on my Grand cherokee, so far I like them.

IMO Mich LTX M/S
Bridge Dueller both are very good all around tires the Mich you will get a few more miles, the Bridge keep them rotated or you will end up with Iregular wear.

Hi Rock,
I have had BFG All terrain and Good year wrangler on the same truck. BFG is better priced but I found both will hydroplane because the missing straight groove around the tire to channel water out quick enough. Another brand to really look at is Dunlop. Good pricing and they will give good traction in rain and snow with less hydroplaning. Those are my experiences.

SD_sledhead..those look wild! Donno where i'd get them here though.

Anyone have any experience with Hankook? My mechanic is trying to sell me a set.

The BFG off-road tires have a good reputation and Dunlop sometimes gets overlooked but for there reasonable prices I would give them a look see. Check out Tire Rack (http://www.tirerack.com) for some decent pricing and reviews. Michelin probably has the best reputation on the market right now like Goodyear used to have many years ago. Goodyear seem to be more expensive and Michelin definitely are.

Hey Rocketman, I'm not sure where to get those either. I'm going to start looking around here though. As for the Hankooks my friend had a set on his pickup, but they had big bars and were mudd tires. They worked great in the mud and on dry roads, but when we came down from the mountains on ice they scared the $hit outta ya, they didn't grip at all on ice.

I've tried BFG's and a few others, but love the Goodyear Wrangler ATS the best! Perfect tire for the Tahoe. Ride great, fairly aggressive tread with rain grooves.

Hankook z36 was a good tire when it was make in Korea. The Yokohama Geolander A/T+II is worth a look if you want a slightly agressive tire. For a luxury type tire, Firestone steeltex A/T.The BFG's are a great traction tire but are noisy and don't wear well.

I have had the best luck with the michelin tires I have had on the last 3 trucks, the 97 had 63,000 miles on them when jeff replaced them.unfortunately I completely disagree with the goodyear choice, the first 2 new trucks I bought came with them and were trash after 20-25,000 miles.tire I prefer and last bought was the ltx a/t michelin,I prefer it over the m/s,which is on the 03 from dodge, looks more like a car tire.I have not had it stuck though :slick: .

My shop sells about 2500 tires a year. We move alot of Michelins. There is a reason for that, they are the best tires you can buy. They last forever, have the smothest ride, awsome traction with the Z siping. The only tire for that truck would be a LTX M+S. I put a set of these on my Burb last summer.Oh my god what a tire,it made a rough riding truck smooth, the reason is the softer sidewalls.Goodyears do not last,we are replacing them @ 25,000-30,000 miles on cars and trucks.Sorry but to me Goodyear the name says it all (good for a year)

Get the Michelin LTX M+S,maybe move up to a 265 instead of the 245.

You know I would not steer you wrong Adrian

I had very good luck with the Firestone Steeltex A/T. I finally took them off my Burb at 71,000 miles and they could have went longer. I replaced them with the Bridgestone Dualer A/T because the price was right and they got good reviews from those that had them. 23,000 miles and I still like them.

I've heard good things about the BFG All Terrain also but were pricey.

Go with the BFG All terrain K/O's. You will not be dissappointed by them. I have had them on almost all of my trucks. They are ok as far a noise and I really like the tri-guard side wall. he only issue I ever have with them is they run a Uniroya case. What happens is the inside starts to deteriorate fast and if you get a nail hole and they are say 3 years old you will find when you attempt to buff the effected area the rubber tends to crumble. It hard to explain w/o actually showing you the tire. That being said i still run them and recommend them to every one. As for mxz7's recommendation of Mich's. Forget it. Only the Canadian Military buys them. I used to run mich's but i got really tired of slipped belts. Cost me way to many tires. Junk. Just my $.02 though. Go with the BFG's. They work well for the banjo pickin' inbreds in Saskatchewan. Yes I'm still bitter from the loss on sunday.

LOL...Westwood got what he deserved :cussing: I am starting to really like those Bridgestone Dueller REVOs..alot of tech in there that makes sense on paper..and they are rated highest everywhere I look.

Here's one for you Rob...

out of of all the tires mentioned I would choose the michelins.they don't get cupped as fast as the others.and the fact that I have gotten the most mileage while maintaining good ride with them.I had used the bfg's back when I was in high school on my truck, they were not at all the best tire.as for ride the a/t bfg 's will not even compare to the ltx-a/t. you will not get as many miles either.

I guess it will depend on price..I'm thinking that those duellers are going to be expensive.

Actually..on that note, I had to go with 265/75R16...stock was 265/70R16...how much is this going to affect my speedometer? Should I get it set?

I agree with everyones smak on goodyear's.I have had good luck with the Kelly series tire's,I just put on a set to the cost of about $400 us.It's just a 2 wheel drive truck but they ride nice and look good.I have had AWR,SJR(mostly highway)And just bought the SUV model. My last trip to the UP with the little bit of snow and ice that was presant was not a problem.

mxz7
12-12-2003, 08:36 PM
You made the right choice!

A 75 series tire is taller which means the speedo will read slower than actual speed.
Skinny tire go through snow better anyways.
The tire calibration can be changed with a scan tool,a Tech 1 or Tech 2. Bring it on by the shop and I will do it for ya

Rocketman
12-12-2003, 08:39 PM
They aren't that narrow..265/75R16 don't look too narrow to me..of course, stock was 265/70R16 so its really not THAT much different..1.3" difference to outside tire diamter?

mxz7,

If you check in TIS you will see that the 70 or 75 aspect ratio is the same, there is only a difference of 18 rotations per mile and the bigger tire on the base cal will let the ABS be less sensitive to pot holes on decel

Ive found that the M+S tires I like the best are the Goodyear AT/S 7800 Biting edges (The most on any tire) and two aqua channels. Plus they last 100000km.

Ive had BFG AT KOs. Also an excellent tire but unfortunaly the design is outdated. A ton of road noise and even though they last passed 60000km they lose there effectivness and become as good as summer tires.

Between my dads and my vehicals ive sampled a lot of tires. Ive seen our durango with AT/S get out of snow that had people running for tow straps. It will be good enough for what ever you need.

Another good tire was goodyear GSA. They dont look like much but they worked real well on a snow covered road.

Just remember that with the computer design techonlogy out there today just becasue a tire looks really rugged doesnt mean anything.

Rocketman
12-13-2003, 11:01 AM
That's all fine and good Machzzz1, but we've run Wrangler AT/S a few times, and I've never seen a tire become so useless so fast. Not even any traction in the rain nevermind a snowy parking lot.

All you need to know and more right here.
www.tirerack.com
Excellent site all tires rated, and reviewed. Just bought a set for my Grand Cherokee Limited. I had them shipped to me, Had a local tire shop dismount the four on my rig, and mount the four new ones, CHEAPER than the cost to get just the tires from any of my local tire companies..
Oh yeah the tires I bought were Firestone Destination LE 245/70SR16
I got these tires for $73.00 each US.
Shipping charges were $38.60 US for all four.
Through my local tire companies the cheapest I could get this particular tire was $110.00 each US, and that did not include the mounting and balancing.
All the reviews of the tires on tirerack will help you decide which tire you will want most, for the conditions you drive the most in.
TireRack will also drop ship the tires to a local tire company in your area where all you have to do is drive there and have them installed.
Hope this helps ya out.

yeah that's where I looked..I read alot of the reviews in the tire survey. Really wanted the Bridgestone REVOs, but I couldnt' get any ordered in in time for my sledding vacation..so I went with the Michelin LTX A/T..I think they will do just fine (and I gotta say this truck looks better with the slightly bigger tires! :D )

Bridgestone Revo's LOL thats what I almost bought. They were like $30.00 or so more each, than the FS Destination LE's that I purchased. We have had one snowstorm so far since I put them on and it dumped 20" of snow on us and the FS were outstanding in the snow. Did you end up purchasing from Tirerack.com?? Great prices IMO.

No I bought the LTX A/Ts from a place here in town..usually by the time you order something and it gets across the border, after all the exchange and duty and taxes, its cheaper to buy here. Also time was a factor. I think the michelins will do well too

Summit makes a nice truck tire and in my areas it is cheaper than all of the big tire makers( bfg,gy,mich etc). I have a 1/2 silver and run 285/75 16r Cooper a/ts on it. They were ok at best in deep mud or snow, good in the rain though I paid only 103 per tire mounted and balanced. The summit tires were 111 mount and bal. Just my .02$ :dazed:  :christmas:

I've had them on every vehicle I owned, and never had a complaint.
