SWRules Hi, im new here to this site. Im also new to snowmobiling. I have a snowmobile that my friend is letting me work on because i have a lot of spare time im willing to help him out. Im having some engine troubles and i was hoping someone could help me diagnose the problem..
First the ride is a 94polaris rxl 650. The engine turns over good, but sounds spuratic and hesitant. there is not much smoke at idle. when heavy idle is applied i get lots of smoke. drops of oil is spitting through exhaust. i have new plugs and good oil. it seems cylinder one is running cold so i replaced the coil to it. this did not seem to help. all of the plugs have oil on them.
Maybe if you cant help diagnose the problem you could answer some questions for me. would this be an fuel injection problem? should i be looking to replace injectors? where the engine is actually keeping good idle im kinda leaving that out. the airbox is not clogged so that seems ok. my next thought is am i adding too much oil? how would i find out? and am i just not getting enough spark? how would i find this out?
any help that anyone can give would be greatly appreciated. i really dont want to have to pay to have a shop diagnose the problem. if emailing me is easier please email specter280zx@aol.com
thanks a bunch matt

First of all check the cable going to the oil pump, if it breaks the pump will go to a maximum oil setting( so you won't seize on the trail) if not see if is out of adjustment. Since it seems you are getting too much oil I would think your problem isn't fuel related. Eliminate one thing at a time don't try to diagnose too many things at once. Hope this helps and keep us posted on your progress

:( i checked the oil cable and it is in working order. im not sure if needs adjusting or not. im still reading clymers trying to figure it out.
but on another note i really screwed up. in the process of wondering what it would be like if a cylinder wasnt getting gas or fire i thought i would unplug a wire when it was running. bad idea. i pulled the plug wire got shocked and dropped it. the engine died quickly. now i cant start it. when i pull up the gas safety and turn the key i dont get the fuel pump like i used to. so i think i may have fried the fuel pump relay. i have two of the same relays on the sled. so i switched the two and now i get the fuel pump. but i though i better replace the bad one before i try to start it again.
can anyone else tell me what else i may have done to stop it from running. my stupid act.
thanks matt

There should be a mark on the arm and the housing of the oil pump. Thats what you line up.
