A little insight on some carb spacing.... :dazed: I am making up some carb spacers for my 700 and I now a few guys would like some for there 800s.Now some of the kits you can buy make them approx 1/4 of an inch thick. Now, is my 700 gona benafit from 1/4 inch or should it be 3/8 thick, like the 800 HOs.....
It seems to me that the more the carbs and reeds are pulled away from the cylinder the better it can breath....but how far is to much???? can any one shed a little lite??

No gains??? Did you Dyno it? and if so...
the gains would have been found in the bottom to midrange!

when we done the reed spacers on the 700 it was an 00 formula z,yes we did dyno it.

All your trying to accomplish is to clear the rear boost transfer tunnel of the top reed stop. It hangs into it slightly. On a 700 this can done with a spacer or boyeson reeds (allows removal of the stops), or by simply notching the top reed stops. The 800 motor has more of the cage protruding in, thus the popularity of spacers. IMO spacing the cage out any more than is needed is a waste. With all due respect to dooman the fz700 cylinders were a completely different casting than the mxz in 00, so his results may? have been different. Also spacers on the roundslide 00's make airbox removal more of a challenge.

I did not dyno the reed spacers on the 00 mxz's that we have because I seen no gains on the formula that was in the shop at the time.I agree that I might have had differant results ,only that I could not notice the spacers from the seat.that being said the only sled I had the spacers on that did not have boyesson reeds was the formula, which had the stock set with stops.

dooman, did you ever get into your formula motor? I'm curious about the piston and ring differences they had, they seemed to live with tight cyl to wall clearance, and rings survived. they really loosened the mxz's up.

unfortunatly no I never had it apart.it was not mine, and has been sold since.I wondered the same thing myself about the rings.but out of the 2 '00 mxz 700's here only 1 has gotten pistons and rings ,they were not to bad either(the ones coming out).I suspect when I tear into the piped sled they will be worse.
