I have a 2001 ZR 800. It has approx. 2,000 mi. on it and I have not done anything to the clutch, except for blowing it with compressed air to clean things out.

My question is, how often do you have to check things over? ie. spider, rollers, etc. I have seen a Zr 500, and a ZR 600 both blow clutches apart. I am pretty mechanically inclined, but have never done anything to a clutch. If it should be looked at, what should I look for? What should be replaced?

Thanks for the help.

Check all of the wearable parts such as the Bushing in the Weights and Rollers. Check to make sure they are not sloppy or loose. Go to your cat dealer and ask them about buying a rebuild kit for your Clutches, they are a lot cheaper than running one to long on worn parts and having to replace the whole thing!

I pull the drive clutch off every 1500 miles. Pull off the Hat. Pull the wts, replace the bushings and lube it with Comet Clutch lube. (Expensive stuff) Works great. Cat clutches have these weird bushings on the wt pins that wear pretty easy and if you let it go too far then the wts start to wear on the other components etc. I clean the sheaves up with a scotch bright pad, very lightly. The secondary I usually just take a look at and pull it off to put on some more never seez. So far after 3000 miles I only had my drive spring break on me and thats it. Works like a champ.
Good Luck.
Oh, If you decide to tear into it. Just make sure you mark all bolts etc. Its a balanced system, so make sure you put the pins back the same way etc too.
