I need a clutch kit for my 88' Indy 400 and i was wondering if a clutch kit for a 94' Indy 500 would work on my sled. Anyone know if it will? Travis

I think that it would fit but I dont know how much you will gain being that it is for a 500 vs a 400. They should be the same P-85 clutch. Someone correct me if I am wrong!!

It will fit, bt is probably not what you need. Needs to be a kit for your specific engine so the weights are correct and the helix angle and even the springs. :dazed:

I just looked around at some clutch kits and i found that Indy 400,440,and 500's from 88'-98' have the same clutches, therefore the clutch kits are the same. I think i will check with my local sled shop to see what they say before i purchase a kit though :) .

you are right and wrong same clutch, but different clutch components. the two sleds run at completely different rpms, and have different engagement speeds, and also different shift out rpms. weights, helixs, springs, and ramps change all this. the 400 will have completely different numbers then the 500 will. dont make the embarassment of goin to a shop and askin just spend a couple hundred bucks and get a kit that will work properly for your sled.

The only way to see if it will work with out trying it is to compair the stock componenets on both machines and see what the differences are. Yes the Clutches themselves are the same but like everyone else says they might have different components in the clutches themselves. One thing to remember is that the newer 500s are severly down tuned comparied to the older pre 90 500s. That being said , the kit just might work. I would say you could probly use the helix from the kit and the springs etc but a slight change in clutch weights would be all you need..But then again maybe not. I say take it out for a spin in stock form and note engine rpm through out the exceleration range then install the kit and take it out again. If it is reving higher then stock then get some heavier weights, if it is under reving too much then get some lighter weights. For good over all performance I like to have them under rev a couple hundred rpm then stock.
