I'm looking for some help with studding my new sled. I just picked up an 04 Blair Morgan MXZX 800 that a guy backed out of a snow check for. I'm only in my second year of snowmobiling and have been riding a tired old 96 Polaris Ultra. This ski-doo was a lot of money, but I'm hoping I'll think it was worth it once I ride it.

Anyways, it has the 1.25" track, and I guess I have to get 1.3XX? long studs? What are the recommend studs in this length? I'm thinking 144 studs, and am also looking for links on some good stud patterns. Has anyone heard of some new stud nuts that are longer and help reduce bending them over?

I've been reading through old posts on different stud patterns. It seems that studding only up the middle is popular. However, in reading about the different pattern's, I'm lost with what a "scratch line" is?

Eric, from my experience i'll tell you, do not under stud. If you have a spinning track from not hooking up and one of your few studs hooks up on something it can and will tear out. I've had 670's that I put 192 in and they were studded near perfect, it was a lower lug height though and I really don't know if that would have changed things or not. I've had friends who were too cheap to stud it correctly and ended pay the price (and then some) later. Check out a woody's brochure (or look them up online) they usually can point you in the right direction, and have stud recommendations. Remember when buying studs, the cheapest price is not always the best deal. Go with a good quality stud from a company that has been around more than a couple of years. Good luck whatever you end up doing.

paying much attention in the spring.

I have the 03 mid season release Blair Morgan and can help you
there. Installing the tunnel tracks was painful. I only have the 1inch
track and put in 1.175 studs. I opted for 144 just down the middle
and haven't pulled any with 1500 miles on the sled. I was a little
nervous with only 144 as all my other 700 and 800's ran with 192.
It does slide a little bit in the corners with the 144.

In the 04s, the slots for the tunnel protectors are already there so
you won't be taking the seat and fuel tank off the sled.

BTW, the scratch lines are the unique spots (or lines) that
a stud can penetrate the snow, ice, grass, whatever.

Think about if you only had 1 stud between each paddle and
they were exactly lined up perfectly in the middle of the track.
You would have only 1 scratch line. Eventually, as the track
started spinning, all the studs would dig a line in the ground
and not hook up very well.

The trick is to get as many lines as possible. Today's templates
will give you 20 lines for 144 and 24 for 192. Possibly more.

A simple V pattern down the middle of your track only gives
you 8 lines.

I ran 144 up the middle on last years rev with the 1" track. 144 is lots of stud if you keep them in the middle. With an 1 1/4" track if you go with more than 144 the rotating wieght gets crazy. I have an 04 renegade with the 1 1/4" track and i'm thinking about 2 per bar up the middle which would equate to 96studs in a 121" track sled. I could go on about all sorts of different experiences i have had with studs but i'll leave it at that.
Oh one thing, If some tells you to puts loads of studs to prevent spinning ask them if their sledstill spins in loose snow. and then when they answer yes.......ask them what happens to their studs when they hit a rock or stump while spinning those 200+ studs.... I'll give you a hint......same thing that would happen if you were spinning 96 studs. Unless your going icedragging and are installing 240 steel ice picks your studs will not give you dead hook.

Thanks for all the replies. I like the idea of keeping the studs in the middle. Maybe I'll start out with 96 up the middle and see how that works out. If traction is too loose, I guess I can run another 48 on the outside.

Has anyone had any experience with their sleds being tippy only having studs in the middle?

Gunner, it's just an MXZX, but one of three color options is this blair morgan version, with a "blair morgan" sticker on the side.

It will not be tippy
I just installed 96 studs on my MXZ500. I was going to go with all 96 up the middle, but I wanted more scratch lines and more bite in the corners as well. So I made up my own patern. I went with the basic V, then instead of the V again I put two on the outside, then V and 2, V and 2, I t worked out perfect and should prove to be a good stud pattern for my riding.
