: Sdi Questions
binger12 11-24-2003, 09:26 PM just a question on the 04 600 sdi, i ordered mine with out electric start, but the machine came with a little battery to start the fuel pump. So my question is will the machine start if the battery goes dead. my dealer couldn't answer this question, he was call bombi to get an answer but that was 2 weeks ago, maybe somebody from here can help. thank steve
Deadman 11-25-2003, 10:28 AM Dead battery=no fuel pump.
I am really wondering about this SDI stuff. I almost wonder if its a necessity to carry a spare battery in the truck for those long weekends???????????
Do the Doo 11-25-2003, 10:48 AM Deadman is correct. I travel with a Battery Charger and a looong extention cord. I have electric start with DPM and the MP?? which all use the battery. I do know if the battery is dead, once the machine is up, you need to let it run for at least a half hour to recharge. I will even run really rough. Best way is always pull the battery and do a quick charge for the fuel pump to prime correctly.
binger 11-26-2003, 11:32 AM I just go off the phone with bombi, and i was told that the sdi with electric start will start
but the sdi with electric will not start. he told me on the phone that some sdi models came batteryless so you need to give the machine, a great big pull to start the fuel pump. My machine is no electric start so i am happy. :D
ZR Rider 11-26-2003, 11:37 AM Sort of like AC's BEFI... 2 pulls and away she goes!
Deadman 11-26-2003, 02:15 PM THAT IS COMPLETE BS! The non electric start SDI's are coming with a battery that is similiar to what you see in like a Moped. It weighs about 3 lbs, but its still there. Its BS that some are coming with no battery. THey all get a Battery, because that was half of the goal----to not require 2 pulls to start it. The battery is like 4 inches square in size.
The batteries are fairly common and only cost $40, so it is definately an option to get a spare and take it with you, or keep it in a truck when you trailor them somewhere.
ALSO its a simple 12 Volt set up, so if your battery ever causes you problems, you could always jump start it from any SMALL 12 Volt source. That means even a Cigarett lighter in a car could get you going-----A lawnmower could jump start you-----basically you could cut off you cell phone charging cord and touch the wires to your sled and fire it up. ITS THAT SIMPLE. I really wish that people would realize how simple this problem would be to solve if you ever get caught in a bind. I am planning on carrying "Some sort" of a 12 V minature battery with me when i go on long trips. I'm not sure what kind of battery it'll be yet, but I will find one! :blahblah:
Rottie 11-26-2003, 04:45 PM 5 watt solar charger would get you out of a jam!!

I can't RUN that fast! :p
Just Doo ME 11-26-2003, 07:54 PM Carry some wire and alligator clips and jump it of someone else in your group, usually someone else has electric start. But most times something else is causing the dead battery problem unless its just age.

It won't really matter what is killing the battery. All you'll need to do is touch the wires on the wires and it'll fire the fuel pump. Then pull the rope, and it'll be running! Its an option.
blizzard9700 11-28-2003, 10:20 AM Here's my take.
1. SDI with battery (models with electric start).
Battery will activate injectors. Push the Start button and off you go.
If battery is weak and will not run the electric starter, it might still have enough juice to activate the injectors. In this case, pulling the cord will start the engine.
If battery is COMPLETELY dead, you're S.O.L. and will need to boost.
2. SDI without battery (models without electric start).
Capacitor is used instead of battery.
To start: One full-length pull of cord to charge the capacitor and activate the injectors. Second pull to start the sled.

INcorrect. ALL SDI's have a battery. The electric start models MIGHT have a bigger one than the NON electric start ones.

I think the "smaller" battery you are referring to in the non-electric start version is actually a module which contains the capacitor.
Anyone have a non-electric start SDI to validate?

Deadman 11-28-2003, 04:17 PM My dealer just showed to me like 2 days ago. Like I said its roughely 4 inches square. I saw the actual battery. It was even made by Interstate!
Just Doo ME 11-30-2003, 08:59 PM I read somwhere on here that theres enough juice in the capacitor for the fuel pump to work even with a dead battery, and a tip to "wake up" the mpem by holding the start rer button for a couple of seconds.
konkinj 12-01-2003, 12:52 AM 12 volts DC is 12 volts DC. You can boost from your pick-up without any worries. No need to worry about cell phone cords etc.
