: How Many African Americans.....
maninblack 11-30-2003, 03:52 AM have you seen or do you see on the trails?
this is not being racist or anything, i am just curious, because where i live there aren't any. just wondering if there was any black people in this sport
maninblack 11-30-2003, 03:55 AM by the way mods... if for any reason you feel this thread is inappropriate... feel free and delete it. i am hoping it doesn't get out of hand just for asking a simple question out of curiousity
PAZR700 11-30-2003, 07:46 AM I spent 5 years in the Army in Alaska. It was told to me that it was a medical fact that colored people have poorer circulation. This causes them to get colder faster than your average caucasion. They also have a heavier and denser bone structure which also makes them heavier in water so they can't float the same way you or I would. :whatever:

Crash Bandicoot 11-30-2003, 08:45 AM This is the funniest post/thread I have read in quite some time :D
LOL to say the least... poor circulation????
"Brothers on the Trail"
Let me point out first that I do not think this is a rascist post.. It's O.K. to be inquisitive.
Let me be the first to say that yes I "CRASH BANDICOOT" am black.... been black since I was born :D
I'm on my 12th sled been riding for approx 14yrs and have logged thousands of miles.
Make no mistake I ride hard and fast. I have been to some very remote area's and when we stop to gas/eat/whatever I am always the life of the party and the topic of conversation.
I think of myself as "Captain Kirk" I boldly go where not many have gone before.
I have seen other "Blacks" on the trail but few and far between.. BUT that will change.....
What's really funny for me is when I get stopped on the trail in a spot check...
The officers ALWAYS ask "Is this your sled?"
This just made my day!
NewfieBullet 11-30-2003, 09:20 AM I've never met anybody on the trail who wasn't either white or native. Granted, I grew up in a town of 9000 where there was only 2 black families, and now I live in North Bay where the vast majority of the popultaion is either ...white or native.
DGZRT 11-30-2003, 09:59 AM I HAVE THE privilege OF RIDING WITH MY BRO-N-LAW EVERY WINTER AND YES HE IS BLACK. HE IS ONE OF THE MOST MECHANICALLY INCLINDED PEOPLE I KNOW GREAT MAN TO HAVE WITH YOU ON THE TRAIL. HE GOT HIS SON INTO KITTY CAT RACING BACK ABOUT 5 YEARS AGO AND THEY WON THE POINTS CHAMPIONSHIP FOR WISCONSIN IN THE OPEN CLASS. A FEW PEOPLE MIGHT RECONISE HIS NAME MARCUS CRUMP. THEY BUILT ALL HIS SLEDS (6) OF THEM BY HAND. ITS STANGE TO SEE A KITTY CAT GOING 30 MILES PER HOUR. I WISH HE WOULD HAVE STUCK WITH IT (TO EXPENSIVE) I THINK HE WOULD HAVE BEEN THE FIRST BLACK SNO-CROSSER TO MAKE THE PRO'S, THE KID WAS FEARLESS.

permafrost 11-30-2003, 10:17 AM I came into this thread with the finger on the delete button but now am suprised with what I found. IMO I dont see a problem with this thread.
Speaking of Ontario in general. Our urban centres have a high multicultural population and more and more people are getting into winter pasttimes. I have seen all races and all walks of life on snowmobiles. It is truly a sport for everyone, young and old, black and white and everything in between. Working last year guiding out of the deerhurst I took people out from Brazil, Equador, Columbia, Mexico, Finland, Great Britain and even India. I even saw some Asian Guys on some seriously dialed in Yammies.
FreezerBurnt 11-30-2003, 10:25 AM Ever see the Sean Paul music Video??
It has a bunch of Black guys on Skidoos somewhere in Cottage country :hallo1:
Their is also a LL Cool J video in the late 90s that have black guys riding
I have seen a few Asians here in Sdbury on trails as well as a couple of black guys
I am trying to get my Palestinian co-worker to come out sledding :)
There was a poster on snomonews named BR that rode sleds
permafrost 11-30-2003, 10:33 AM FB I have seen that video with the Rap guys with huge down parkas busting around in the powder on MXZ's Great Video
Snowbody 11-30-2003, 10:41 AM In this sport there is no black/white tall/short or fat/thin.There are only two kinds those that ride snowmobiles and those that don't.
dwhee 11-30-2003, 10:47 AM Seem to be looking at some weird threads today, ie. I feel bad for my sister.... :slick:
Ive never seen a black person on the trails but have seen one in my dealer buying stuff for his Mach 1. This is good everyone should enjoy the sport of snowmobiling.

PhiltyPhil 11-30-2003, 11:31 AM An interesting point about motorsports, cars, bikes,sleds....etc once you put a helmet on, everyone looks the same, and gets bout the same treatment in the first turn. When the green flag drops the bulls**t stops. Check out the fastest young MX rider in the states "Bubba" Steward.

Gotta disagree on this one.
IMO there are two kind of riders. fat and skinny.
Then there's the fat guys that think they can ride like skinny guys. :)
Tundrahog 11-30-2003, 04:35 PM Our buddy flies in from Oakland every year. He loves to sled and the winter cold. He's a transplant from Chicago.

I agree.
In the entire time I have been snowmobiling I have seen thousands of people and I think 2 were African Americans. I wish more people joined us in the sport. I don't care what color they are or their background. As long as they are having a good time and are respecting the rules/laws and are paying the same trail fees the rest of us are being gouged with. The sport needs to grow if we are to ever have a large enough voice to stop all these tree huggers and other namby pamby's that are keeping us away from more and more real estate to sled on every year.
I have asked a few of my friends but their response is always "Are you insane it is too F***ing cold out there".

highlandergerman 11-30-2003, 10:33 PM In all the miles i have ridden i have only seen a few, They where all at yellowstone.
scott_nadeau 11-30-2003, 10:43 PM When I worked for an Arctic Cat dealer in the 90s I sold an 86 ElTigre 6000 to a black guy from my town...I think he was the only black man in my town. We became friends and rode together a lot. This was his first sled, and he rode it like a bat out of hell. I have since moved 30 miles away from him and haven't thought about him in a while. I think I'll give him a call to see if he wants to go riding this year...thanks for bringing up the topic!
sleddinfool 11-30-2003, 10:57 PM My first time seeing a black man riding was about twenty years ago. I thought it was the funniest thing not because he was black ( I have two adopted black cousins who won't ride) but because of what he was wearing-- a pure white snowmobile suit, so white it blended right in with the snow, and one of those old red/white/blue helmets. He did have a wide smile on though and that is all that counts. I then met a guy who eats breathes and lives sleds named Mark--- from Canada nice guy. Today on the way home from my mom's in the U.P. I stop for gas at St. Ignace and low and behold see a black guy filling up his brand new lincoln aviator and hooked up to it was a trailer with a new looking rev under a cover with some nasty looking studs in it. I say more power to whoever wants to ride. Kevin
Crash Bandicoot 12-01-2003, 07:31 AM don't sweat the small stuff fella's...
very interesting posts. As I said I didn't think that it was intended to divide people on this board.
If any one is coming through central Ontairo send me a note and we can "link up"
You can see first hand how it is to ride with "Captain Kirk"
Snowing here like crazy now......
kowalcs 12-01-2003, 07:44 AM I've only seen one black guy in all the miles I've put on. Than again, who knows how many I've passed on the trails and not realized it. That just goes to show, that out on the trails, we're all just snowmobilers and color doesn't mean a darn thing.

Koolaid? I thought black folks drank Ripple
Many years ago we ran into 2 black guys riding Johnson Golden Ghost sleds.
They stopped us and ask us for directions and we got to talking about their sleds.
In the day, the Golden Ghost was the Cadillac of sleds, reverse, mirrors, cigarette lighter huge trunk and so on. While they were bragging up their sleds, we were looking at some of the hottest looking black chics I have ever seen, the Halli Berry type
Bauer 12-01-2003, 10:50 PM I havent ever seen any around here, but then i have maybe seen like 10 black people in my whole life, if that!

What I am saying is do you want some black friends? Do you think this sport needs more black people? Whats your facination with black people? I got a question, have you ever seen any midgets on the trails? I just dont understand why you would ask something like that. Oh I know, youre not a racist. I never thought about it before but now I'm gonna be on the lookout for black folks on the trails. I'll give you a holla when I see some.
spikegary 12-02-2003, 12:04 PM :withstupid: I haven't seen any midgets either.
This is one of those subjects that make everyone uncomfortable-for wrong or right reasons it doesn't matter.
I agree with some of the folks above-helmet, coat gloves, balaclava (sp?) who knows race, sex, gender, etc. We are all sledders.......
dave583 12-02-2003, 12:20 PM :withstupid: Precisely my point. Why bring it up? I love these posts. Everyone just loves black people, got to get some more out snowmobiling. Hey I know a black guy, he's a great guy. Bet you got a story like that too gary. Go save the world buddy.
louis 12-02-2003, 12:22 PM This is painful!
Whats next a forum for minority sledders?
We are all minorities! We are sledders!
JETRep 12-02-2003, 07:25 PM Why does this topic make people so uncomfortable?
If this conversation makes you uncomfortable, then YOU need help, the thread doesn't need to be closed.
I have a black roommate. I've taken him to upper Michigan sledding a couple times. He had heard that folks were racist there but everyone was respectful and generous to him.
He hasn't gone in a while because he isn't a big fan of the cold and didn't enjoy my problematic Exciter.
I think he'll be coming again this year since I have some better sleds now.
Sgt4347 12-02-2003, 08:08 PM I just got my first sled a 2003 Yamaha Viper and I look forward to riding this winter2003/2004. The only problem is there is not to many places to ride in south jersey. I am a African American and when I brought my sled the dealer was very helpful and even suggested that I go riding with them in canada and other places. I havent decided yet. I always thought about how I would be accepted but from the current posts I feel pretty secure that I wouldnt have any problems.

Crash, you are sooooo right. I guess some people are just way too uptight when any question of race, creed or religion comes up. I am sure it is partly due to the way society in general handles things these days. (hear no evil, speak no evil, don't dare to voice a true and honest opinion) Does it really matter what race or religion someone is? NO. Does it hurt anyone in anyway for someone to ask? I really doubt it. If it does, that person should seek professional councelling IMHO.
Scott S 12-04-2003, 02:49 PM If your a good guy / gal that is all that matters.
My friends are my friends based on who they are and it has nothing to do with colour, height, weight, handicap, sex or sexual preference.
I'll admit sledding is predominately comprised of white and native riders. Don't know why but again I've never stopped to ponder it either.
There are also not many new immigrants such as east indian, pakistani, chinese etc into sledding either. Maybe it is because growing up in a rural environment our communities were comprised mainly of whites and natives. As kids growing up we saw our favorite sleds tearing by the house all winter. Based on that early immersion into sledding we were hooked. It has only been the last 15 or so years that in our area we have seen many other ethnic groups moving out of the city and into the rurals. With this change in the local population I'm sure more and more people other than whites and natives will get addicted. These families kids now see the sleds tear by and poof, their sledders. How many people from the big cities were avid sledders 20 years ago. None I knew as there wasn't the exposure level to sleds as there is in the rurals where we ride from our front yard. Most people from the big cities who ride know someone in the country who gave them their first taste of sledding. Read the posts about everyones first rides, at a cottage, neighbours in the country, my dads in the country. Ever hear of one in central park?. Big cities draw immigrants because there are programs to help them get accustomed to the social ways of their new homes. These cities also offer ethnic activities to give newcomers a chance to mingle with people they have backgrounds in common with. As people get comfortable in their new surroundings they eventually look for permanent communities in which to raise their families and strike out on their own. Hense a new generation of sled heads is born.
An As* comes in all colours and shapes. Just make sure your not one and I'll ride with you.
Crash Bandicoot 12-04-2003, 05:37 PM Scott S has a big brain :D

SD_Sledhead 12-04-2003, 06:15 PM It could be a bad thing Scott, your helmets might cost more in size xxxxl! :D
Scott S 12-04-2003, 06:42 PM Crap, I can't afford a huge helmet so I'll repost my thoughts,
" Uh, (long pause of silence as my small brain trys to remember my train of thought) that might be correct provided it isn't wrong"
Hey, is that a sled going by, gotta run!
Ah, that normal helmet feels just right. LOL.

I have to say that i got nothing but respect for people like you. To do something that is not considered the norm is awsome and hopefully in the future we will get more colored riders on the trails because God knows we need the support.
I personally have not seen any on the trails but I did encounter a guy buying parts for his Mach 1 at the dealer like my brother already posted. I was impressed.
Its to bad that most African americans and other rasis don't leave the city and explore the country. I know from experience that there are a few areas where they wouldn't want to go because of the dumb ### redneck attitude but hopefully in the future that will all blow over and guys like Crash Bandicoot who just kick right thru all that nonsense will make it happen.
Good post.
