Maybe that guy who started the 'Chronic Posters' thread should have a close look at that pic......

Hey! Was that a one-liner?!?!?

That display is outside Timber Charlie's, a bar in Newberry, MI. We rode up on it last year, and it definately takes your breath away when you walk up to it....kinda like walking up to a grave. The actual helmet is in there too, all cracked up. The ironic part is, supposedly alcohol was not involved in that crash, but excessive speed and bad judgement were. Either way, it definately makes a point. Supposedly the guy was loading up the sleds one morning to head home, and took one last blast across a lake. It was a little foggy, and the guy was going waaayyy too fast, left the lake and ran up on shore w/out realizing it and smacked a couple trees. Too bad every popular sledding town doesn't have a display like that for all to see, and think twice.

Seeing things like that sure you think. In the town I live in they just had a mock car accident that was supposed to be alcohol related and then left the car out front of the high school for a couple of days. Hopefully the kids will think before they drink.

Does make you not want to drink and ride, though I never have thought about it anyways. I fiqure I do well to keep it between the trees sober let alone being impared.

hopefully the grown ups will think before they drink too. Our group all 30 and under, most right around 22 years of age, none of us drink and drive, ever. But we have come across numerous people that have, all in there 30 or early 40s. I thought you get smarter with age? Not to say that is for everyone. But come one? THINK!!!

Wayne, Newberry is in the Eastern UP (http://www.fishweb.com/recreation/snowmobile/trails/eup.html), prob 40 miles or so southwest of Paradise. It's right on HWY 28 running east and west accross the UP. The display is located on the north end of town, just after crossing the R.R. tracks.

I notice the same thing. I think it is because when they grew up drinking and driving wasn't that big of a deal. I'm only 17 but do like a few cold ones but never when I have to drive/ride somewheres. Even at parties most people I know would never drive if thy have been drinking and there is always a DD.

I'm glad someone posted that picture. Jim Fritch is right, the display is in Newberry, MI right before you head north on the trail. I sled in Newberry twice last season and saw it each time. Real spooky up close. Stupid question, the rider did not survive right? I never heard the real story of how it happened, thanks for posting that. Newberry is a great sledding area for those of you who have not tried it yet. A little scarce on gas and bars compared to other areas, but great trails. We did the up and back rides to Grand Marais and then to Paradise this past January. And the short ride to the Tahquamenon Falls Brewery from Newberry is awesome. Do not miss the beer cheese soup at the brewery.

Correct Karl, the guy passed away. Can you imagine that ride home for the rest of the group!!!! Probably enough to make some people drop out of the sport for good.

I saw the display last winter too. We stayed in Paradise and rode over to Newberry for lunch there across the tracks. I'd like to see more posts of people who have seen it in person and what affect it had.

I don't drink so that's not a problem for me, but I do like to hit the throttle at times like anyone. I think you'll find that most people who die because of speed didnt know the terrain (if no alcohol involved).

I got the same feeling from some pieces of a guys hood I found at the base of a tree the year before while riding in the Chandler Hills area in the lower. The next weekend someone had a cross on the tree.........

A couple years ago there was a guy who went off the trail going up along a river and hit a tree and died. We were getting some gas when somebody came to the store asking us where we were headed because this person went off the trail. I was buy the spot later in the spring on my 4 wheeler and there was still some snow around. At the scene the trees were all taped off and you could still see blood stains i the snow. Was really errie driving by couldn't imagine what his buddies went through. Though I can't remember if it was alcohol related or not.

See that display every year. Every time I make my son stop, get off his sled, and count the number of pieces the inside of the helmet broke into.
Every main trail drop lot should have a display like this - really makes you think.
That area (only my opinion) seems to have alot of sledEds - especially on the holidays and weekends. Been ran off the trail a few times and thought I was dead once or twice from joe snowcross trying to do 90 m.p.h. on my side of a blind corner.
Actually got to see a pack of total morons almost kill one of their friends on the trail to Paradise last march.
4 guys all with too much money and not enough brains were jumping the rollers going into tehquaminon (sorry, I know I mis-spelled that) with their brand new RX-1's.
One guy jumped the roller, turned around to watch his buddy, and parked right in his landing path.
Needless to say both sleds were a lot shorter and the guy had to be air lifted out.
Stupid kills - or is it natural selection?
Locally we had a guy on a Mach Z lake racing, didn't let off and hit the sea wall at 100 m.p.h. plus. He ended up in the homes living room in 3 seperate pieces. Alcohol was a factor.
Hate to see it hapen, but every year without fail it happens repeatedly.

Great attitude toward the sport. Maybe one day,all sledders will think this way. Lets just hope none of us get taken out by a drunk until then.

I've only been riding about 3 years now but I have been nearly hit about a 1/2 dozen times by people coming around a blind corner on the wrong side of the trail. I'm not sure why people just assume there is no one coming the other way. They're always going full speed and if you add in a few beers to slow response time it's a bad situation. I'm surprised you don't see more accidents.

I see this many times each year,,,,I was first told that it was alcohol related, but after a conversation at charlies, it was not. The guy did indeed forget to stop at the far side of the lake,,,,,The helmet will really make you think,,,,,it just has chunks missing out of it.

I took pics and have them here, but have never scanned them to put them on the puter,,,,I can if anybody wants a pic for whatever reason.

I also know that there was a group of 6 running south out of Grand Marais last year and the lead was going way to fast and the 5 behind him came upon a very nasty accident. I dont remember hearing how they got him out of there, but he layed there with a couple of his buddies trying to keep him alive while the others went for help. Alcohol was involved. The groomer ended up picking up the sled and took it back in town and wanted to put it right in front of the bar, but didnt,,,,not sure why,,,,,

I like to knock a few back,,,but after the day is done!!!!

Looks like there have been a few that have thought they were almighty come by this display since your picture was taken. Take a look at the sign in my picture. I can just picture it: "Nothing wrong with a few beers before I get on my sled." As they rip up the sign.
Or who knows, maybe the wind tore it up.

Actuall what I thing is more remarkable is the sign board next to sled. It lists all the fatalities by county and gives a describtion of what happened and wether speed, alchohol or drugs were a factor. I read most of the reports and was surprised at how many crashes where drug related, there were also a high number of deaths due to people slamming into groomers,(more than you would expect). Keep the ski's out of the trees and the track down. Jason

I seen that too last year on a ride to paradise. The sled is a lot worse in person, that guy didnt even stand a chance :( . Also on the trip to paradise a guy in his forties weighing in at a whopping 130-40 lbs driving a new zr 900 blew a corner and hit a tree, his legs hit the handle bars and snapped one of them like a twig. The pain and screaming of this guy was terrible.Needless to say this really slowed our group down for the day. Something like this will really make you think!

listen pal i changed my sig cuz some of you goody-goodys didnt like it. i have no problem with stopping for a cold one on the trail thats a regular thing for the guys i ride with. you need to know where the line is some people get reckless and stupid. and the cops will pinch you if your not carful their really cracking down on drinking. thats been a part of riding for as long as i remember. but some guys go to far and ruin it for everyone. Ive been riding for over 20 yrs and havent crashed one up yet and i drive a real machine not an imported wannabe racer.

This is exactly what happen to a freind on our first ride of 2001. And yes the screaming while they set is leg was something I hope never to hear again. Booze was not a factor. It was the first snowfall, his ski got caught on something and pulled the sled into the woods. I was always more careful on first rides since then too.
